Doing the old flip/flop again. Says the Iraq War is a mission from God at her church. Now says she doesn't profess to know God's will but she sure didn't have a problem saying it was his will earlier. If you can't win with the truth, try bafflling them with the bs.

so is it still god's will to drill for oil baby as she stated in that same sermon of hers, drill baby drill? this fundamentalist fanaticism is a bit ridiculous and i'm sure everyone agrees, has absolutely no difference from any other muslim or religious fundamentalist. it has been only about 800 years since we've had crusades, why not start again...
also, from my understanding, was it also not georgia that instigated the attacks with russia? with this logic, should the US actually be supporting russia under nato requirements? psycho btch here really wants to bring the second coming of christ with that red button as soon as possible.....

Well, according to John McCain, we're all Georgians now. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't gave a rats ass what happens in Georgia. They apparently started the whole mess, apparently with some encouragement from the neo-cons in this country...probably Cheney and McCain. You can't blame Russia for feeling obligated to help defend the 2 areas that were attacked by Georgia, since they are in Russia's sphere of influence. I think we should reconsider even letting them into NATO. Also, why are we putting missiles in Poland? Why are we so intent on renewing the Cold War?

This is the 7 year anniversary of the 9/11 murder of innocent people in New York City and all the candidates called a truce out of respect and took off except one. She gave her only scheduled and scripted interview with the press. (Of course Charlie) I found it amazing that the statement on Iraq being "Gods Mission" has changed, it now was a quote from Honest Abe.
As far as a war with Russia I want the people who would support that stupidity to select the 1200 cities and sites we would be willing to give up. Their nukes are still very much alive and well.

and independents rock if you really listened to the whole sermon given by the pastor, and not the excerpts that were taken from it, you would have learned that the pastor was actually saying that america needs to stop pointing the finger at other countries/people when they do some of the same things that they are condemning. and the pastor said that, not obama. the comments that people are making are in reference to her sermon/speech/words. obama never said the things that his pastor said. if we are to take on the words/issues of the people who we are represented by, then i think no one would look to any americans as anything other than fools, since they see a fool leading us. i am not what bush represents, and obama is not what his pastor represents.

i guess you are the same person that you were twenty years ago? if so then what non progressive part of the world have you been in? eight years ago, even less, people believed in gwb. believed in what he stood for, and what he said. he had a large following from texas. i am sure that a lot of those people, who were supportive of him prior to the last few years, have now distanced themselves from him, just look at mccain in the last few months. just because you support someone for years, doesnt mean that you support them for life. sometimes, in the real world, what happens is people grow apart in their views and ideals. and unless you were at the church with the obama family, you do not know what went on. you dont know what the teachings were. what the focus needs to be on are the issues. once again obama can not be held accountable for his pastors teachings, just as no one is holding palin accountable for her pastor, for twenty years before she went to another church, teachings. hold people accountable for their actions, not the actions of others.

We have a very long history in the country of praying for God's blessing when fighting wars. I am not sure if the liberal elite's are angry that she believes in God or that she prays. Many of our great presidents have prayed and asked the nation to pray in times of war.

Ok she was in church long before she was selected for VP. You don't want us crapping on Obama for what he said about his white mother back then. Same goes for you too. Do any of you Jr Democrats remember the Gulf Of Tolkien the North Vietnamese used to take their gun boats and charge at the US ships in international waters and make like they were attacking them. On this day a US warship fired on them in response to this aggressive act. Thus beginning the start of the Vietnam war. The Russians invading Georgia was just such an act. It gets murky with who did what and when but the end result is war. The Russians are up to their old tricks probing the wire looking to see what the reaction will be. Georgia has oil Russia wants oil they need oil. Why can't any nation join NATO? Is it some elitist organization. Some club that has a membership and a handshake like Harvard. How can Obama say he represents me. He just seems like someone of privilege a silver spoon rich fat cat. Oh that's right because he told you he wasn't. I love the way the media is portraying the Obamas like they are one of us. I am sorry I don't make over 90 k a year working at a hospital and have a nanny for my kids. And get low cost loans to buy my house because I am in the senate. Gee I wonder why banks are his biggest supporter. And he got that nice cheap loan. Really what was the payback?

Abraham Lincoln said the same exact thing. So did John F. Kennedy. And I can go on to name many Presidents who have invoked a hope that what we do to make men free is God's will. Too many Americans take our freedom for granted but as my grandfather once said, every generation must defend their own freedom. And after reading these boards I am truly scared for the next generation who want appeasement and who will disarm their national security. Once Russia comes on over with Iran and nukes us all to plaookaville, well you had better brush up on your Russian or be ready to convert to Islam less you have your head chopped off. Think it's not possible? You had better PRAY it isn't.

"don't know about anyone else, but I don't gave a rats ass what happens in Georgia. They apparently started the whole mess, apparently with some encouragement from the neo-cons in this country...probably Cheney and McCain."
Now THAT is one of the funniest accusations I've heard in a long time. There's this little thing called NATO, and Obama, Biden, McCain, and Palin ALL support Georgia being a part of it. This brings certain requirements from the US, requirements that Palin simply read exactly as they are stated. Our obligations in this are set in stone, her comments were not only a repeat of required treaty obligations, they were word for word Obama's statements regarding our required treaty obligation., which were also McCain's exact words regarding our required treaty obligations. The President doesn't even have the capability to go against that, if that war against Russia became necessary to defend Georgia, it would be a required action that the US could not back down, much as without a full-out war, sanctions are required under those same treaty obligations. Maybe if you knew history going back even a month, you wouldn't be making the ridiculous claim about Georgia starting it (making assumptions on your part kills any potential argument you may have), and ESPECIALLY the wild comment about McCain and Cheney pushing for it. Of course, you REALLY discredited yourself by using McCain instead of Bush, proving undeniably that your statement were not intended to be based in reality, but simply stated to discredit a candidate. Bush is the President, not McCain, remember? Not that you had any credibility in your comment to start, but when you replace Bush with McCain simply to discredit a candidate, you really shoot yourself in the foot.

I believe she was quoting Lincoln another republican your party savaged during his administration. Lets see the Democrats during that war tired to undermine the war by racist fear mongering, class envy, they referred to Abe as a monkey or worse and get this if they would have had their way slavery wouldst have been abolished the south would have been able to do business as usual. If you check the enlightened party's record it is pretty grim. The tactics of name calling and questioning the intellect of the opposition goes back a long way and its a loser most of the time thank goodness.

TIFF-491743 wrote "Charlie Gibson, on the other hand, is supposed to be "neutral," although no one in the media is anymore, and not twist her words around (the "mission from God" bit)"
I watched the whole church video long before her comments became an issue. She most certainly does say that we are on a mission from God. There is absolutely no reference or comment alluding to President Lincoln during the Civil War; none. She also says that building the pipeline she wants is the will of God and asks the church members to pray for its completion.
Need more? She then goes on to praise one of the young men as a prime example of what a good Christian looks like. Visions of Germany in the 1930's flashed though my mind (remember the Hitler Youth?).
Palin is hard right GOP, what I call the American Taliban. They are all for liberty and freedom as they define it. See it their way or you are the enemy. By picking Palin, McCain made a strategic move to secure this wing of the party and it worked. Good for him, but I have opted out of the party.

Let's get some facts straight about the "task from God" bit. I know it happens on both sides, and I don't claim to agree entirely with the Obama/Biden campaign nor the McCain/Palin campaign, but this article completely twisted (and conveniently omitted some of) her words.
First, if you look at the original video of her church appearance, you would see that she asks the congregation to pray that it is a task from God. The video shown all over the news cuts off the first part and only includes "that it is a task from God." And if you keep watching, you'll see that she repeats her request for the church to pray that what we are doing is God's will. She didn't claim that it was, but that we need to pray that we are doing the right thing.
Also, the article wrongly reported the Lincoln quote she referred to in the interview. The quote she used was "Let us not pray that God is on our side, but that we are on His." So when the article stated that she contradicted herself, she in fact was just affirming what she had already said.
Herin lies the problem: No one fact-checks anymore. No one does their own research. We all just believe what we hear and regurgitate it without a second thought. It is our responsibility as caring, concerned, voting citizens to be as knowledgeable as we can about these candidates. Please please please, whether Republican or Democrat, check the sources before forming an opinion.
Respectfully yours.

Every church I've sat in there are moments I think the preacher is full of crap and there are days I could not tell you what the sermon was about an hour later. Must be a lack of interest.
I grew up in an Assembly of God church like Palin's and would not vote for anyone from that denomination. Religion does matter: just ask the jihadists.

Independent voter with all due respect sir, one can not invoke the name of God when what you are doing is based on lies, which is anti-God. We are in Iraq because we were told that Iraq had WMD's and a connection to Al Qaeda. Both assertions were knowingly false as has been revealed by the C.I.A. The Bush administration purposely misled the American people to invoke national fervor. Insighting the masses into believing that the invasion of Iraq was a just cause. This was a deliberate lie.
Anyone that truly believes in God and knows His word, even if in small measure, knows that God does not approve of us lying. And He certainly does not approve of us killing, maiming or destroying in His name based on LIES. That is the paramount difference. God is not a man that he should lie. Neither should those who we have entrusted our lives with.
Ones purpose must be more noble when given the trust of those that they represent...

No one said that religion is bad, but AMERICA is full of different religions even those who don't believe. And Evangelical Christians believe that they are ALL right and anything goes. Where was the uproar about Sarah Palin's daughter. There was none because Republican's were quick to point out that "most American's face this issue". If it happens to a Republican they get a pass. The issue is the far left is getting knocked but not the far right? I don't agree that GOD has anything to do with war, only humans. And might i add, alot of folks agreed with Rev Wright. America isn't the problem, it's the leaders. And for some reason some Republicans think if you say anything bad about the Republican leaders you are unpatriotic. I am disagreeing with George Bush, not America. Republicans think if your not pro-war your unpatriotic. There was nothing that Obama said that leads me to believe that if attacked he would do nothing. Diplomacy means the management of communication and relationships between nations by members and employees of each nation's government. Appeasement means the political strategy of pacifying a potentially hostile nation in the hope of avoiding war, often by granting concessions. So where in Obama's speech show him in being an appeaser. It surprises me that Republicans always "cling" to religion to justify an action. SLAVERY was once justified by religion. And ALL you folks who think Obama is attacking McCain/Palin unfairly. Have you seen the many attack ads of McCain based on lies. Especially the sex ed for kindergarteners. And some of you are ignorant to believe it.

LLmTruth I completely understand your point. I do agree that Iraq was the incorrect battlefield, however, praying that our troops will be watched while in harm's way is noble. I watched her on youtube and feel that in no way was she referring to Iraq as a Holy War. Also, before we stormed Normandy, the Germans had not attacked us. Yet they did attack others and commit acts of horror! Saddam's regime also committed horrors against its neighbors and its own people. Lincoln went to war initially against our own people because the Southern states wanted to secede. Georgia's actions today mirror that concept. It was also Lincoln who said to Congress during the time of the Civil War that anyone who speaks out against the country during a time of war is treason. Now I for one believe in dissent!! But I also believe Lincoln to be a hero and one of our greatest presidents. I am simply pointing out the hyprocisy I see everyday from liberals.

We have a very long history in the country of praying for God's blessing when fighting wars. I am not sure if the liberal elite's are angry that she believes in God or that she prays. Many of our great presidents have prayed and asked the nation to pray in times of war.
That is all true. People do pray for God's support and blessing, and the chaplains make their appearances all the time. Common.
But this is the issue I have with Sarah Palin: She, just three months ago, said that this is a task from God. Now, when confronted about it, she retracts and says that she would never presume to say what God's will is. Why the contradiction?
So my issue with Sarah Palin is that I can't believe anything that comes out of her mouth. She's lied and misrepresented the truth more times that I can keep track of, in just the two weeks since she was introduced. For the sake of making herself look better, she has belittled Obama's work as a community organizer, and just last night, she presented Joe Biden's experience in foreign affairs as a bad thing, saying that his "thick resume" represents what people don't want anymore of. Apparently, they want someone who can see Russia from their state, not someone who has been to the region and had discussions with leaders there.
And this is what I don't understand. In displaying disdain for Joe Biden's career in the Senate, she simultaneously disregards John McCain's record. And when McCain plays up Palin's "new blood in Washington" upside, he's just repeating what Obama has been saying since January.
So, to answer your question, the 'liberal elite' are not questioning Palin's belief in God or her faith in prayer anymore than they have a problem with Joe Biden's Catholicism or Obama's faith as a Christian. The problem is the double talk from the McCain campaign. They can't get their story straight, and have no desire to. They lie, they fudge the numbers, they misrepresent the truth, and it doesn't matter that they've been called on it over and over again. How many times has Sarah Palin repeated the line about the Bridge to Nowhere, even though it's been disproved?
It's a problem that this campaign hasn't shown any commitment to the truth. It's infuriating to me, personally.

I'll ask the question nobody wants to ask, because I kept asking it to myself as I watched Palin's interview with Gibson. Why is a woman with a newly born Down's Syndrome baby and a pregnant teenage daughter running for Vice President and spending so much time away from her children?

My parents always taught me that lies can sometimes come back to haunt us and the truth eventually comes to the light. So we must be mindful of what we say, especially when it is a lie. A lie is hard to remember and the truth most times sets us free. I guess now is one of these eventual times that have come back to haunt Palin because she wasn't mindful of what she said back then and now she has had flip flopped and is lying again. Now, she reminds me of the boy in the story The Boy who cried wolf. Lie, lie, lie, to the point when she does tell the truth, no one is going to believe her. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but not anymore. She's been caught telling untruths too many times and we've only been introduced to her two weeks ago.

ConservativeIndependent.....you make a lot of sense. What your leader says does not define you. It that were true then the world would think we all follow George Bush's logic or our congressperson, etc. Obama is his own man and his pastor doesn't speak for him. Besides, they only took excerpts form his sermons and if you had listened to the entire speech you would clearly understand he was speaking against the way we blame other country's for dastardly deeds and we will turn around and do something just as bad. We have done some horrible things to minorities in this country and the government has yet to really apologize for them. I know a ot of people are going to say.."here we go again". Well I wonder how many people tell the Jewish community to stop harping on the Holocaust. You wouldn't dare.

Tiger-I personally am a proud black man! I agree that Obama's religious views should not be discussed. However, when the Rev. Wright accuses OUR country of creating AIDS to destroy my race in this country is 100% absurd. These are not excerpts from a speech. These are things the man has said repeatedly for 20 plus years. Also comparing the Holocaust to Slavery is outright pathetic. They are both dark times in history and should be 100% off limits in a forum of this type. Our government has already apologized (as well as states) for the actions of Slavery. This kind of talk only creates more divide in this country and ultimately makes our lives harder.

You conservatives always run to religion and try to use it to browbeat those who don't follow you war and purge scheme. A true Christian does not want to fight unless all options have been attempted. It's interesting that Obama has NEVER been subjected to such scrutiny on his qualifications for PRESIDENT. I guess sexism is still alive and well in the media. Also interesting, Obama has never made a significant decision on any issue, other than to be 1 of 100 to vote yes or no (or Present) on any legislation. Also interesting - Of the two most recent Presidents with generally high marks, one from each party - Clinton (despite his personal failings) and Reagan, both came from the Governor's ranks, not the Senate. Perhaps the ability of Governors to actually make decisions and live with them is not rated nearly as highly as it should be.

IndependentVoter....They didn't need our help. Were they being bombed prior to our invasion? How many suicide bombers popped up at the local supermarket? Our primary reason of speaking of war was to find Bin Laden. Bush decided that since we were in the area why not finish what Daddy couldn't. We let Bin Laden go and continue to plan whatever he wanted while Bush fulfilled his Dad's failure.
- 5 votes
I'm sorry, Tiger, but I don't follow your (or Rev. Wright's) logic. Our country was attacked, 3,000 innocent civilians were killed, and we went after the folks that did it (or were harboring them). I don't see how that is a "dastardly deed". Saddam Hussein murdered a million Iraqis. We sent military troops in to take out terrorists, an evil dictator and insurgents who blew up their own people, as well as our soldiers.
I understand that blacks in this country were treated as property 150 years ago. I'm sorry that happened. I realize that the civil rights movement was long overdue, but it took place 40 years ago. Apologies have been made many times over the years, by many administrations and groups for the treatment of blacks in our country. At some point, yes, we do need to move on. The reason no one tells the Jewish community to "get over it" is because a.) WE weren't responsible for the Holocaust; in fact, it was American soldiers who liberated many of the concentration camps, and b.) Because over a MILLION Jews were slaughtered.
I'm sure someone will charge that a million slaves were brought over in chains from their native land, but I have two thoughts: 1.) Who was it that originally sold them into slavery? It was black merchants who made a lot of money selling their fellow countrymen, and 2.) Is the current generation of blacks in our country worse off than they would have been had their ancestors not been sold into slavery and brought to this country over a century ago?

Well, the liberals are out today on this blog-- spewing all their hatred. Go ahead! The more you rant against Sarah the more the McCain/Palin ticket surges ahead. For example, here in the Blue state of Washington, the McCain/Palin ticket is now only down two percentage points from Obama/Biden and has risen two points in two days. Gov. Palin will be here in Seattle the 24th and I expect her visit will put the R's over the top by as much as ten points.
Go ahead with your usual bitter beer faced vitriol. This is a woman all women should be shouting about (and most are). Sarah single handled not only broke through that glass ceiling, she shattered it! That's what we've been wanting isn't it.
I find it very amusing that the Sisters of the Bitter Beer faced Left are asking if she can be a good mother and work. Say what? We broke through that barrier long ago all you blind followers of the bra burning era.
She has the qualifications and the intelligence to be President in a heart beat if need be. What your liberal men are implying when they ask her that question is, "Hey sweetie (Barak's term for a woman), you are a girlie. Do you really think you can play with the big boys on the international stage." How insulting! How sexist! How wrong!
Go McCain and our dear feminine/neo-feminist Sarah! She IS all that so stop trying to knock her down. You only diminish women (working women and mothers--most of us) by trying to say she is somehow not worthy, in spite of having more governing experience by far and even commanding military than BO who is running for President. Get over it!!

Please keep America a democracy, NOT a theocracy.
This ridiculous ideology has caused so many problems over the last eight years, and McCain/Palin will only make it worse by their misguided efforts to provoke Russia, Iran, etc. It's downright scary what direction they would take our country. Not this time.

Dear somewhat less than independent voter,
You managed to pick many of the most non religious non doctrinaire presidents in the nations history. Jefferson was a Deist having dozens of letters to John Adams, Danbury Baptist Association, Dr. Benjamin Rush, Dr. Thomas Cooper,Francis Hopkins and at least a dozen others on his lack of a belief in a specific God and at times questioning the idea of God itself. Jefferson authored and insisted on the Separation of Church and State and the insistence on religious freedom to practice even for Musselmen.George Washington's religious beliefs are somewhat more obscure virtually never citing religion in his speech or writings. He was a baptised Anglican and purchased pews in many churches he also attended Quaker ,Roman Catholic and Reformed Churches.
His contemporary biographers saw him as primarily indifferent to Religion and had no clergy attending and made no final statement of belief from his deathbed , he practiced Free Masonry more than he practiced religion. Most believers especially wealthy and famous ones were routinely attended by one or more clergy members ,he was attended by none he neither corresponded with or asked advice from clergy . Abraham Lincoln never joined an organized church and believed in a Christian God in the most general of terms. Theodore Roosevelt was born Dutch Reformed attended with fair frequency rarely accepted communion and also attended other reformed churches most notably German Reformed saying he didn't see much difference between one and the other he married twice and neither wife shared his religion. He was pretty much main stream Protestant with a pesky streak of religious tolerance even going so far as to have friends who were Catholic nuns and priests and God forbid Jews , he even allowed them in the White House. John Kennedy a Roman Catholic went out of his way to keep his religion out of his politics because Americans still had a great fear of Allegiance to Rome and Kennedy vowed to keep his religion out of politics. The parts of Catholic Social philosophy followed by Kennedy would be called Socialist by today's fundamentalist. His belief in governments role in supporting and empowering the poor , his support of education and government social programs like VISTA and The Peace Corps as well as civil rights and support of unions would have the Republicans of today calling for the tar and feathers.
Literally hundreds of texts and biographies ,letters and primary sources exist on all of these gentlemen, I would suggest going to a library and reading some instead of turning on O'Reilly or Hannity or waiting for the Conservative Book Club to deliver your next Anne Coulter installment for a $1.00 .

It's interesting that in these absurd culture wars the truth is ignored. On the side of the Religious Right will try to define Jefferson/others as like themselves, believing that gives them legitimacy. Same for the radical atheist/socialist left. The fact is both are pathological liars with a political agenda. As a traditional Deist, I'm at odds with both of these groups and so would Jefferson if alive today. Their only real goal is to see who gets the gun they will point at everyone else's head.

ABOUT SARAH PALIN
I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992.
Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a
first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her
father was my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a
first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more
City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the
residents of the city.
She is enormously popular; in every way shes like the most popular
girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and
won't vote for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because
she is a "babe".
It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She
kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents
for seven months.
She is "pro-life". She recently gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby.
There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.
She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.
She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out
there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.
Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a
champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palins kind of job is highly
sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his
work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or
so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their
major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything
like that of native Alaskans.
Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.
She's smart.
Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000
(at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about
670,000 residents.
During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running
this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been
pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had
gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had
given rise to a recall campaign.
Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a fiscal conservative. During her 6
years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over
33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the
City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation
(1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a
regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she
promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they
benefited residents.
The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration
werent enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed
money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it
with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage
the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said
she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a
new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a
multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece
of property that the City didnt even have clear title to, that was
still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers
involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the
community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it
would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that
could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.
While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office
redecorated more than once.
These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.
As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus
in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will
make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she
proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.
In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she
recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while
she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's
surplus, borrow for needs.
Shes not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas
or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that werent generated by
her or her staff. Ideas werent evaluated on their merits, but on the
basis of who proposed them.
While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected
City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from
the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents
rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's
attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew
her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the
Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.
Sarah complained about the old boys club when she first ran for
Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin
fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as
Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people,
creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally
grateful and fiercely loyal--loyal to the point of abusing their power
to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the
case of pressuring the States top cop (see below).
As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasillas Police Chief because he intimidated
her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska's top
cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure
and she had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty clear that
an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn't
fire her sister's ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation
for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen
contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she
later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to
replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded
for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew
her support.
She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in
help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town
introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council
became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She
abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didnt
like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.
Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything
publicly about her.
When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got
the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one
of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no
background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great
job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the
high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the
structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this
Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party)
engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some
undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all
her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and
garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a
gutsy fighter against the old boys club when she dramatically quit,
exposing this mans ethics violations (for which he was fined).
As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from
Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel
politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the bridge to
nowhere after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.
As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget
guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing
projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative
action restored most of these projects--which had been vetoed simply
because she was not aware of their importance--but with the unobservant
she had gained a reputation as anti-pork.
She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party
leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated
them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a
fiscal conservative.
Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah.
They call her Sarah Barracuda because of her unbridled ambition and
predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly
stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made
point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah's
mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and
experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.
As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package
of legislation known as AGIA that forced the oil companies to march
to the beat of her drum.
Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to
global warming. She campaigned as a private citizen against a state
initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from
pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the
state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the States
lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interiors decision to list polar
bears as threatened species.
McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a
heartbeat away from being President.
There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more
knowledgeable and experienced than she.
However, theres a lot of people who have underestimated her and are
regretting it.
CLAIM VS FACT
Hockey mom: true for a few years
PTA mom: true years ago when her first-born was in elementary
school, not since
NRA supporter: absolutely true
social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill
that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships
(said she did this because it was unconsitutional).
pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to
promote it.
Pro-life: mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Downs syndrome baby
BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life
legislation
Experienced: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has
residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska.
No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on
supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city
administrator to run town of about 5,000.
political maverick: not at all
gutsy: absolutely!
open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at
explaining actions.
has a developed philosophy of public policy: no
a Greenie: no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores
and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR.
fiscal conservative: not by my definition!
pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city
without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built
streets to early 20th century standards.
pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on
residents
pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city
government in Wasillas history.
pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union
doesnt make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim
that she is pro-labor/pro-union.
WHY AM I WRITING THIS?
First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed
voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting
programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny +
Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local
government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.
Secondly, I've always operated in the belief that "Bad things happen
when good people stay silent". Few people know as much as I do because
few have gone to as many City Council meetings.
Third, I am just a housewife. I don't have a job she can bump me out
of. I don't belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no
fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will
cost me somehow in the future: thats life.
Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100
or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah's
attempt at censorship.
Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to
say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.
CAVEATS
I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in
spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor)
from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of
Wasilla, and I can't recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust
for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible
for a private person to get any info out of City Hall--they are
swamped. So I can't verify my numbers.
You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the
population of Wasilla, ranging from my "about 5,000", up to 9,000. The
day Palins selection was announced a city official told me that the
current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was
5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to
2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90s.

McCain-Palin: a match made in heaven. They flip-flop, debate themselves, and both have unimpressive educations. On the other hand both are likable, friendly, and down to earth.

Who cares if she's qualified. She's arm and arm with Bush on the issues, no health care solution, tax breaks for corporations to make CEO's richer, no tax relief to middle class Americans, no help to let high school graduates be able to afford college. If McCain does get elected, even more people will be bankrupt from healthcare bills and be out of their homes. Maybe then there will be enough people fed up to say enough is enough. Let's hope we don't have to wait another 4 years to do this again.

This is what american oil companies are doing over seas. What do you think they will do in Alaska???

The largest oil-related environmental disaster in the world - Chevron dumped over 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Now they are trying to hide their disaster and launching public relations campaigns about "human energy". The truth is Chevron's actions cause death, cancer, birth defects, miscarriages and the worst oil related destruction of the Amazon.
Their damage is estimate at up to $16 billion. Chevron can't hide its actions any longer and should pay up. Visit www.chevrontoxico.com to learn more and take action!

McCain was charming. Made me laugh and threw some meat out there. He did well. We liberals are supposed to stop saying positive things about neocons. I call 'em like I see 'em. He's still a coward, masquerading as a maverick, pretending to be an independent thinker. The truth is, he long ago lost sight of why he's here and is now only capable of picturing the brass ring. The prize. He's empty. He likes shiny things.
I should focus on this for a minute. Doubtfire (McCain) has a friendliness deficit and Palin has the charm of a middle aged junior varsity cheerleader. Talk to her at a kegger and get back to me.
I want to tell you something. I'm just gonna say it. I relate to this guy (Obama) because I'm not dumb. He's smart and I'm not dumb. He's smarter than me and I like that. I think you should too. No matter how stupid you are, you should at least be able to tell that this guy is way brighter than you or McCain and that should be reason enough for you to vote for him.
Haven't we just suffered for over seven years because of our President's stupidity?
What's her name did her very first interview tonight as a potential VP. Charlie Gibson ABC, asked her in a glasses on the nose Ben Franklin way, if she experienced any hesitation when McCain asked her to be his running mate. She didn't blink. She said she told Doubtfire if he thought she could help the ticket and the party, then absolutely.
She said this, as opposed to asking, even of herself, if she could function as President of the United States. It appears as though it never entered her cheerleader brain.
And for what it's worth, she had no idea what the Bush Doctrine is.
Her calves were hot though.
Just a few thoughts -- the whole thing with Georgia and Russia is actually pretty convoluted. Yes, the Georgian Army did "invade" South Ossetia, an enclave of Georgia. Russian forces then responded to "protect Russian Citizens", who all lived in North Ossetia (which is in Russia, not Georgia). It would seem that neither side is without blame.
To add to this, Russian Forces also invaded the separatist enclave of Abkhazia, which is also in Georgia. They then blockaded Georgian ports and indirectly threatened American Naval Vessels carrying relief supplies to the region. For this, people are upset with the Russians and the Georgians. As I said before, neither side is without blame.
But, while we are attempting to assess blame, should we take a look at other things going on? Over the last few years, our military has been assisting the production and distribution of Afghan Opium. We have also recently been violating the sovereignty of one of our allies, Pakistan. I can't see this and not feel that someone, somewhere in our government has lost his or her moral compass.
I don't feel that Ms. Palin is suited to be my Vice President, but I don't know enough about her to attack her on a personal level. I disagree with what appear to be her views on too many issues. She seems inadequate in her understanding of Foreign Relations, but so do most of the people I know. Many of them can't find Georgia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, or Pakistan on a map. There are many who really believe that al-Qaeda in Iraq is the same al-Qaeda that attacked us on 9/11 (they are not the same).
I feel that it is a travesty that Sarah Palin has been attacked about her family, but I also feel that it was a travesty when she offered her daughter up to the press, seemingly to stop a rumor about her youngest son.
There are a lot of questions I would like to hear answered, but I am pretty sure they will be dodged or denounced as attacks. It seems that the media has become a part of the Republican Party, as far as Ms. Palin is concerned. I do find it strange that she was "vetted" while under a bipartisan ethics investigation, which could lead to an indictment. I don't see that she can be blamed for that; after all, she is innocent unless and until she is convicted. I do feel that it may raise questions about McCain's fitness to make decisions.
I hope that I am wrong about them, just in case they get elected.
In case you are wondering, I chose to vote Democratic during Virginia's Primary. I had to choose at the precinct whether to cast a vote for McCain, who had already won on the Republican side or for Clinton, who still had a chance on the Democratic side. I opted for Clinton, because I am really not satisfied with Obama. I will probably write in Bill Cosby in November, since I feel that we have two losers running this year, but I will VOTE.
I retired from the Navy in 1996, after twenty years of honorable service. I truly honor anyone who has served or is serving now. That was enough to put me into McCain's camp for quite some time, until he caved in to Bush's plan to torture prisoners. I thought McCain was right when he opposed the move, and was greatly disappointed when he flipped just as soon as the pedophile was run out of Congress.
Remember, people, we all have our opinions, but try not to be quite so personal in your attacks. This is supposed to be a forum, not the Congress.
If you happened to watch the actual footage from her interview, you would know she did not say the war in Iraq was a mission from God. This is a perfect example of the ignorance of many Americans as to what the real issues are in this election. Everyone reads the Cliff Notes, but few have actually read the book. I am simply tired of the blatant misreferencing of comments put forth by both political parties and would urge Americans to listen to the facts and make an independent decision. This means listening to interviews, speeches etc. in entirety and not letting the media tell you what they THINK they heard. Perpetuating this already overplayed misquote is really quite annoying!!!
I am SO excited about Sarah Palin! I love her and John McCain's views on the role of government.

Obama and Biden voted to fund "The Bridge to Nowhere" instead of using the money for Hurricane Katrina victims.
McCain has NEVER asked for an Earmark

The Bridge to Nowhere: A National Embarrassment
by Ronald D. Utt, Ph.D.
WebMemo #889 Today, Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) will offer an amendment to the Senate's appropriation bill to transfer the $223 million that Congress had previously approved for a bridge in Ketchikan, Alaska, to fund reconstruction of a hurricane-damaged bridge in Louisiana. Dubbed the "Bridge to Nowhere," the bridge in Alaska would connect the town of Ketchikan (population 8,900) with its airport on the Island of Gravina (population 50) at a cost to federal taxpayers of $320 million, by way of three separate earmarks in the recent highway bill. At present, a ferry service runs to the island, but some in the town complain about its wait (15 to 30 minutes) and fee ($6 per car). The Gravina Island bridge project is an embarrassment to the people of Alaska and the U.S. Congress. Fiscally responsible Members of Congress should be eager to zero out its funding.
The bridge has become an object of national ridicule and a symbol of the fiscal irresponsibility of many in Congress toward the money entrusted to them by the taxpayers. It has also become an embarrassment to the people of Alaska and to responsible members of Congress who now find themselves tarred by the same brush dipped in the muck of the highway bill.
In response to this national humiliation, many in Alaska have vented their anger in the state's newspapers, and the papers' editors have also objected to the bridge on their editorial pages.
In the Anchorage Daily News, Diane Mucha of Eagle River wrote, "Of course, Alaska should and, hopefully, will volunteer to reject the money for the bridges to nowhere and Congress will apply the money for the hurricane relief efforts."
David Raskin of Homer, Alaska, wrote, "Alaskans owe an apology to the people of New Orleans, to Alaska Native people and to the Nation for their selfish shortsightedness in sending these scoundrels to Washington and voting to keep them there."
In the Ketchikan News, Dave Person wrote, "Thinking about the immense disaster in the Gulf States, it occurred to me that the most effective thing that the residents of Ketchikan could do to help would be to return the money earmarked for our Gravina Bridge."
Back in Anchorage, Art Weiner wrote, "In a collective act of passion, the people of Alaska should request that the funds appropriated for our bridges be used for infrastructure reconstruction in the hurricane-affected area."
Despite the willingness of many in Alaska to give back the bridge to pay for disaster relief, Alaska's congressional delegation has dug in its heels, and many of the delegation's colleagues, including all of congressional leadership, support its resistance. If Alaska loses some of its pork, they fear, so might they.
In opposing Senator Coburn's amendment to defund the bridge, one prominent Senator told a closed-door meeting of conservatives that the plan was simply impractical. Many of the earmarks, he claimed, are counted towards a state's equity bonus and thus are part of the state-by-state allocation formula. Defunding the bridge, he said, would direct at most $75 million to Louisiana, with the remaining $148 million returning to Alaska as money the state could use at its discretion for road projects.
Never mind that the Senator seems to view $75 million in taxpayers' dollars as a sum of little consequence; what the Senator sees as a problem in fact would be a considerable benefit to Alaska. Assuming the Senator's numbers are right, Alaska's Department of Transportation would gain $148 million in money it could spend on the state's transportation priorities instead of a useless bridge that would serve a tiny fraction of the state's citizens.
Perhaps recognizing that the citizens of Alaska, including many in Ketchikan, do not value the Gravina Island bridge project, its defenders have been forced to resort to threats. One House "Leadership staffer suggested that retribution could be levied for the removal of the project in a technical corrections bill or other measure," BNA reported. This is the sort of challenge that fiscally responsible senators should relish and, through their votes, show the House leadership exactly what they think of this childish threat. Most importantly, pushing back would show the nation that their august institution of democracy still maintains the moral authority to be trusted with hard-earned tax dollars.

This matter was settled by Congress and the Senate not the Her.

Your point is? It seems like the persons getting the press here are the Senators that were pushing for the bridge. And wasn't the Senate controlled by the Democrats then anyway. I worked in government for a long time and here is a lesson for you. If you have a budget of 1 million for a given year and you don't spend all of it you have to return it. So next year you only get 800k and so on. So the rule to government is to always ask for more than you need and spend it. Palin was looking out for the people that put her in office. TrooperGate I read the report and frankly if someone that held peace officer powers threatened my father I would try and have him fired too. He also was a poacher something that in the hunting world is very bad. Again how would you like to get arrested for poaching only to find out the cop who arrested you was a poacher too and nothing happened to him. This same trooper tased a child. Seems to me like a bad seed. Does anyone remember Dan White. Sounds to me like she had some overzealous employee that like to throw names around to get the info so he would look good to his boss. Hell we have doctors that look up private info on famous people all the time. So should we fire the director of the hospital. The chef she let go as the chef and gave a job somewhere else. Is it the chefs fault she didn't want to have the chef and should the chef lose his job because of it. It was damn nice of her to make sure that person found another job somewhere else and was taken care of what the hell is wrong with that. Track joining the army to avoid jail all I can say is show me the proof. Nobody has come forward to own up to knowing anything about that. Check snopes. Her baby boy being her daughters now that is a good one. With all the sources offering millions of dollars to anyone with proof and nothing in the way of proof.. never in the 60 years of my life have I seen such a campaign to ruin someone. There are so many arm chair Politicians with not a shred of evidence to prove what they are saying and you all take as the truth. If so many of you believe that she is lying and McCain is lying how in a million years can you believe that Obama and Biden are telling you the truth all the time. In politics its just not possible to be everything to everybody. You tell us that something is wrong with us because we follow our convictions but aren't taking things on faith also. Neither Obama or Biden have led a nation aren't you taking a gamble also. You seemed blinded by your convictions that you don't want to hear anything bad about Obama or Biden and dismiss it so lightly if you do hear something. Remember Jim Jones they loved him too.

You've made a factual mistake. Deripaska has never been accused of any crime or convicted. I just don't get what's so wrong about the meeting?
In Contrast:
Obama bought his home on the same day Syrian born, Convicted Felon, Tony Rezko et al. purchased adjacent vacant land. Obama paid $1.65 Mil, $300,00 below market value for the mansion. Rezko paid full market value for the adjacent land. Obama wanting a larger yard, later purchased a portion of the Rezko property for $104,500.
Obama continued to do business and accept campaign contributions from Rezko, after it was well know he was under investigation for political corruption. WOW
Tony Rezko gained a large portion of his wealth conducting business in Chicagos' Black Neighborhoods. Obama provided political favors to Rezko resulting in Rezko's Company, New Kenwood LLC receiving $14 million dollars. The $14 mil was to be used for development of low cost housing for Chicago's elderly (this project was located just outside of Obama's state senatorial district). Rezko and partner (Obama's former boss received $855,000 in development fees for this project.
Rezko and cronies have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Obama's political campaigns.
And McCain did WHAT?

The wonderful thing about Ms. Palin's church is that they don't have to "hope" they know God's will, they "know" what God wants.
They know that we should drill in Alaska, and that we should go to war with Russia to bring Armageddon.
- 3 votes
Zoo- and you "know this", HOW? War with Russia? Armageddon? I don't recall hearing any of that in her interview.
Many churches across this nation pray for God's will to be done (mine included). BTW, if you actually listened to her interview, she explained VERY clearly that none of us "know" God's will; we pray that we will be "in His will".
PBS and BBC are fair and balanced??? What planet do you live on. According to them, we "should trust the media" on any issue, despite the fact that 90% of them are very liberal in their voting. I don't agree with everything on FOX, but when it comes to BALANCE, their marks are far more even handed than any other outlet (based on independent studies), and NBC is a joke.
I agree, Roy. Why on earth would an American go to the BBC for our information? I'm not sure if the person posting that realized it's not actually an American station (although you'd think the accents would give it away!)
"You cant believe Obama is a reformer, he is a product of a political machine that is rotten to the core. "
Prove it...look who's campaign is full of lies and dispicable mistruths. SLEAZY McCain..
45 minutes to Charlie Gibson's "interview"....can't wait to see how softly he treads. My expectation is he'll accept every scripted answer she offers and move on to the next question. I have to assume there's a reason he got this first (and perhaps only?) opportunity to interview Sarah Palin.
Now they've announced she and McSame will campaign together - tied at the hip - so they can proclaim she's too busy mingling with the voters to visit with the "liberal media" that only wants to persecute and prosecute her record and her personal life, those mangy sexists! Give me a break...
I truly believe voters are smarter than before - they won't fall for this crap...

Sadly, Charlie Gibson is an establishment poodle. He will act as if he played hardball after he played tee ball with her. Also, 50% of the American people are dumb enough to fall for the same BS over and over. We can only hope they reject McMad (a neocon on steroids) and his sidekick for whatever reason which happens to stick in their heads as they approach the polling booths.

Why the hell is everybody coming after her like dogs. You think with all those years in Washington that Biden doesn't have bones in his closet. Oh yea he is a saint because he is a democrat. Now in the Liberal dream world I want him, he must be good. Everybody is thinking that Palin is running for president against Obama this kills me. That reporter ask Palin questions like if she were running the country. I really don't care what the hell the vice president says I really care what McCain has to say about every question that reporter asked. Did anyone ask Dick Cheney about what he would do with the USSR do you care? Has anyone asked Biden what he would do. Already the FBI foiled a plot against Obama by some white boy nut jobs. In this world of Terror around every corner maybe they should be asking Biden how he feels about the Russians and the North Koreans and what he plans to do. Hell he doesn't even want the job he is trying to pass it off to Hillary. Now that tells you something because his turn is coming and someone is going to rake him over the coals and then it will get ugly.

I watched some of Palin's interview ...I watched until I began to gag. Charlie Gibson treated her as if she had just survived a plane crash...he handled her with kid gloves. What a ridiculous setup "make sure that the GOP approves of the questions)and her two week-crash-course in World Affairs was taught by Schmidt and Rove. I wonder which of them worked her "strings"?
- 12 votes
You are right - voters are smarter than that and they have already figured out what an empty suit Obama is.

Sounds to me like you are not very smart. Hey Hamlet- did you expect him to bitch slap her. remember she may be the next vice president and he doesn't want to have his white house press pass revoked. Or may be he is not a jack ass like you. I suspect the later.

I wish it were true that voters were smarter than before. Have you heard or read that Karl Rove quote: if you keep the people ignorant they vote republican every time (something like that)
Already, voters have been distracted from the real issues and McCain's "continuation-of-Bush" policies by adding Palin to the ticket and then the ridiculous accusations over the pig in lipstick phrase--used by McCain himself months before (he probably doesn't remember)
This is going to be a repeat of the 2004 election and there will be instant regret just like there has been since 2004 for re-electing Bush

Last night's interview of Ms. Palin was certainly telling...take away the teleprompter, and Ms. Palin was like a fish flopping around on a beach. It was, at best, uncomfortable.
Newt Gringrich, a Republican for the last 30 years and former Speaker of the House recently said, and I quote:
"Sarah Palin would not have been chosen as McCain's running mate had Hillary Clinton been on the Democratic ticket."
Clearly, one of the most prominent Republicans today has shown that the GOP put Ms. Palin on the ticket to both anchor the neo-conservative vote, and try to pander to the female voters. How stupid do the Republican handlers think women are??!?
This middle class, white, mid-50's, registered Republican female is voting Democratic in November.

If registered Dem voters are as smart as you hope and claim - will they listen to Biden and Hillary (and most of the Dems from the primaries) - Obama isn't qualified?
OR, will they listen to Biden who stated that Hillary would've been a better choice?
Strong support from within your own party!
Oh, Bill will campaign to help with that $20 million debt that Obama cost him.
- 2 votes
First of all, Em-457916If, I LOVE your post!!! It's true. People within Obama's own party had claimed that Obama was not qualified to run the country, yet no one listened. Not the delegates who supported him nor the voters who voted for him. Did they (media & voters) all misplace those statements along the way? And when Biden came out with the statement that Hillary would have been a better choice as VP, it makes you wonder why then did he accept Obama's request to be his running mate??
And as for Obama meeting with Bill when he started to see himself slip in the polls. Did any of you notice that he had the same private meeting with Hillary and look what happened. She dropped out and supported him. She could have wiped him out at the Convention. We all know it. If she would have stuck to her guns in regards to Florida & Michigan votes, she could have wiped the floor with him. She earned those votes and should have been awarded EVERY SINGLE ONE! It was NOT the Democrat voters fault they voted when they did. It was the States Government who decided WHEN the voting would take place and the Democratic Party should have stepped in then. Don't they keep track on whats going on??
I DO wonder that went on behind closed doors when he met with Hillary and Bill and what deals were being made. Is that what Obama plans on doing IF he makes it? Closed deals behind closed doors??? Is that what you voters want?
Actually, Charlie showed his true colors, subjecting her to FAR more scrutiny than Obama has been given. As to Presidential decision making, there is no President 101, the process is the same regardless of the decision maker. You surround yourself with the best and brightest people, you seek their advice and options and possible consequences, and then you make a decision in keeping with your core principles and what you think is in the best interest of the American people and their safety and welfare. The real question to be asked of a candidate is "What are your core principles, and how do you go about making a decision?" On this, we know far more about Sarah Palin than we do on Obama.
How could she not think about the answer? She did not stop and think about the impact all of this would have on her family? She did not stop and think about all the issues the country faces? According to her she has not even thought much about the Iraq war. This is very scary. How could she not think about it?
- 22 votes
I agree. For someone to be so narrow minded and make a statement that 'not blinking' in the face of a tough decision is a desirable trait, is completely ridiculous. I do not want another GWB who believes gut instinct and 'staying the course' for the purposes of pure stubbornness in the white house. Although, there looks to be a lot of narrow minded, right wing or die, conservatives out there who like her lack of knowledge and experience.

Good decisions are never made without thought. I can't imagine having so little respect for the office of VP. It is so trivial to her that see did have to think about it or anyone in her life. Did she even discuss ti with her husband. I am not being sexist. What kind of marriage can she have. My husband would not do that to me or I to him. That is some true power hunger!
I imagine she already thought about it when McCain was looking around the country. How do you know somehow she may have been tipped off. Do you think Hillary would have to sleep on it. Palin is going to say I am not sure I want to be VP how much does it pay. Give me a break. A woman Governor gets a call from the next president and asks you if you want to Vice President. I bet there are Republican women all over the country just waiting for the call and men to. I don't want a VP to say hey I call you back next week. It just shows no matter what she says you are going to turn it. She could repeat Obamas Playbook and you would think it was trash. Just like me what ever Obama says is garbage and Biden looks like he needs Monica Lewinsky to show how to trim a cigar.

cds, I'm not saying you're wrong, and I'm about to look it up, but you might not want to use wikipedia to back yourself up. It's a far cry from an authority on any matter.
I am not using just wikipedia as my only source, i am aware that wikipedia is unreliable, and since i have little time to try and pull the Alaskan legislature records from 2000, i am using an indepent news organization as a source as well, this was referenced to me from a talking points article i found this morning, and if i could find the Alaskan legislature archives i would use that as well, in fact it was actually my first choice, but i have not had time to search more throughly since i am at work, and i cant post links since i am new. But if you look at Palin's term as mayor in wikipedia and type the search i recommended earlier in google you will have no problem finding it, if you do i will try to type the link in manually myself.
JRR-451319, You asked: She did not stop and think about the impact all of this would have on her family? ... According to her she has not even thought much about the Iraq war. This is very scary.
Well did you ever stop and THINK that when she started running for office she DID discuss this with her family and that they supported her decision? The news media never even looked into that. It did not contain 'dirt' they could use to smear her reputation. As for the Iraqi War, I don't even think that much about it (#1 I was totally against the invasion of of Iraqi and For Afghansian) and I do not hold a office like Palin where issues that affect the people of her State is on her desk and mind 24/7.
Registered Independent / Born Again Republican: You rock!!! Apparently TrueConservative-421579 doesn't know that Palin also attended College. The type of College most of us attend, not a college who churns out Lawyers who know how to use the laws of the land AGAINST us.
cds-354148 & fedupwithliberals: Both of you better go and get educated. Palin was Mayor when rape victims/insurance comapnies were being charged for rape kits and it was the Wasilla Chief of Police was the one who was against his department paying for the kits for it would place a burden on the taxpayers of the town. ALSO, it was voted on by the City Counsel to charge them so quit putting all the blame on Palin unless there was a tied vote and it is the Mayors who breaks the tie. And the article ALSO doesnot state the time period when of when it all started. It could have been before Palin was elected Mayor. Again, news media failing to do their job.
Max-349109: Open mouth, insert foot. You yourself just posted Making a decision doesn't mean it's a good decision, as Ms. Palin has shown time and again. Funny, when some on this thread don't have any facts to support their candidate they resort to shouting and name-calling. Have YOU researched Palin, McCain, Biden and Obama on their voting records, stances on issues? I have. You may be amazed that Palin is all for lowering taxes (which she has) and cares about the concerns of the Seniors (which she does). Her voting practices on these ssues speak for themselves. Look it up.
Michele EagleI think that the real issue is that she cannot think about anything but her finger on the trigger....she's trigger happy...
And so are the millions of Americans who believe in their right to bear arms and protect their property and the hunters who hunt for food. But I do agree Cheney should be banned from any type of firearm including a cap gun. Heck, even a bow and arrow.
As mayor she could have ended that policy by taking the actions necessary like what most politicians are trained to do, bring it up to the press, take the bully pulpit on the issue, i am sure the public outrage alone would have forced the issue, but instead she chose to do nothing, and you have not found a single thing from her condemning the police chief's statement have you? No it took a warning from the legislature then and act to end the practice, and as mayor you have some say as to what happens for your cities policies.
- 2 votes
cds, I used the info you gave me. Again, Palin's name wasn't mentioned anywhere in the Frontiersman article. And please forgive me, but I don't exactly consider Wikipedia to be the best place for facts. I realize she was the mayor at the time, but any other speculation about her involvement is just that.
If you have time to find a credible source that specifies that Palin was indeed in favor of making rape victims pay for their own rape kits, I will consider myself corrected.
Well, hell, if Palin says she's ready, then it must be true!
Expect to see rave reviews from the fundies the day after the interview.

Palin was asked by Charlie Gibson what she thinks of the Bush doctrine (preemptive war) in relation to sanctions against Russia.
She paused and replied : ``What do you mean ? ...........His worldview ? ´´
Then she replied that allies have to do something if you hit one of them. What has that got to do with the Bush doctrine ????
I am appalled ! If Third World countries even know what is the Bush doctrine, Palin doesnt ????How can this woman run for VP ??????
THIS WOMAN HAS ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA about INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS !!
- 16 votes
The shallowness of her experience begins to show through. She needs to study a lot before the VP debate. We probably won't see any more of her (unprotected) before then
- 7 votes
This Palin woman is absolutely clueless. Her view of international affairs is still Cold War era. For the U.S. to engage in war with Russia, is not only unnecessary, but is the wrong war to fight. As I type this, the world is stunned at snapshots of Palin´s interviews and I have been shifting back and forth Arab, British, French, and German newscasts.
Georgia was the first aggressor, not Russia, which is why the European Union while trying to avert armed conflict, is also careful as Georgia is at fault but several all EU countries had expressed support for its membership in the EU. Likewise, it also has economic value to rich nations and Russia had initially wanted to buy the pipelines which Georgia refused to sell.
Eagerness for a job doesnt mean you are qualified for it. Palin demonstrates this clearly well without question. Her knowledge of international afffairs is appalling to put her next in line to the presidency. It is very embarrassing.

I too have been keeping up with what the world thinks of all of the candidates. There's a heap of worry out there. They are really bothered, almost frightened McCain alone will get in with his BOMB BOMB BOMB and start yet more wars but now he's got Palen who too would push for more wars despite the fact she has no idea what she's talking about. Also with her bulldog image/self esteem I really doubt she would listen to anyone regarding smart world views. She scares me!. On top of that if she's such a good Mom, how can she go to all of the soccer games and raise her kids period if she's VP. She'll be gone and far too busy. A VP may not look like much to some but they have their hands full. Kids are in the cold while Momma puts herself and her aspirations first. HMMMM

Meneither123 Me too. The frightning thing is you will have people on here who don't care of what the world thinks. They are busy sitting in their bubble wanting to attack any country who they THINK will attack us. My thing is how some of them sound like the extremist muslims that do not like America because of America's growing influence on their culture and way of life. Many American's don't find it necessary to learn a second language or want to acknowlege the importance of learning Spanish. But it's ok for everyone in the world to learn English. You have people in other countries who know more then 5 languages.
- 2 votes
Gingersnaps, you're right. Some of us DON'T care what the world thinks. This is America. And yes, English is the primary language (yo hablo espanol tambien), and those that emigrate here need to learn it. I don't care if they don't learn it in any other country. If I move to France (ha) I would be expected to learn French. If I move to Germany, I would be expected to learn German.
I think it's great to know more than one language, which is why I minored in Spanish. BUT I didn't learn it so I could cater to those who choose not to assimilate into our culture.
I suppose there are a few extremists who are sitting around waiting to attack another country, but most of us don't want war. I lost a friend in Iraq, so I understand what the stakes are. Sarah Palin's son is on his way over there. I guarantee she's not rooting for another war. John McCain understands firsthand the horrors of war. And I'm sorry to tell you, but there ARE extremist muslims that hate America because of what we stand for. Hence, the attacks by them over the last two decades on our country. Sorry to burst YOUR bubble.

This girl is A-M-E-R-I-C-A...We should not have to learn another language. We have one and it is English. Has been since this country was founded. All of the immigrants who come here should just live to "Learn it or leave" I say. And within the past century we have had a major influx of immigrants coming here and offended by our laws, culture AND religion. I say to them, if your countries laws and cultures were so much better, why did you leave it in the first place? The Bible has been a part of our nation since the day it was formed and I am offend by those who come here and want it removed from public view. You do not see me going over to their country and disrespect their way of life or their religion.

3 Sheets,
From your post I tend to believe you are 3 sheets to the wind. Now lets see what experience Obama has. 143 days in the Senate before he announced his candidacy for president. Of those 143 days congress was actually in session and working just 14 days. Nope, that doesn't qualify him. Our kids spend more time in pre-school getting ready for kindergarten.
Attended a church for 20 years who's pastor damns America. Nope that doesn't qualify him.
Associates with a known terrorist. That sure doesn't qualify him. In fact, that alone would prevent him from getting a security clearance for any government job.
Associates with a convicted felon ( Tony Resko ) Nope, that doesn't qualify him.
Has a wife that said " America is a darn right mean country" and " This is the first time in my adult life I've been proud of America" Nope, that won't work as a qualification.
Thinks America has at least 57 states and maybe as many as 60. Nope, that won't work either.
Stated while in college Marxist professors shaped his political views. OH CRAP, that's darn dangerous for America. No qualification points there.
Is a great orator, well so was Adolph Hitler so that leaves that out as a qualification.

Neither does being a community organizer or being in the US Senate for 2 years, heck even a State Senate. I saw Obama's voting record which is not impressive. Maybe if Obama was in the US Senate for a full term and voted more than he has on issues, I might consider it. independent rocks, you are not truly an independent. you made the most partisan comment when you stated, and i quote, "If she were a man, everyone would be saying what a tough guy. If she were a man, you all would be talking about the fact that her uneducated spouse whose claim to fame is his high school football position and a race is listed as an aide and consultant to the governor. That is the sexism that somehow seems to be lost in this debate. Why would a tough broad need a man that should be at home raising her children sitting in on her meetings? If they win, what will they do, make Lance Armstrong Sec'y of Transportation?
I am a registered Independent. I WAS going to vote for Hillary but have now switched to McCain/Palin. Sooo, sorry if my sign on name was from months ago.

DD50- the article you are citing dealt with waivers issued for minor misdemeanors to allow a person to enter the military. It had nothing at all to do with the choice of jail or the military. In fact, it dealt with gaining the waiver after a conviction in a civilian court. It seems you may have misunderstood the article. One of the questions asked of a person when they enlist is whether they are enlisting in the military of their own free will and under no coercion
As for Biden's son and Palin's son, both are members of the National Guard whose unit has been activated for service in Iraq. There is no difference between the service of the two men. They both voluntarily joined the national guard and are expected to be honor that commitment.

Hillary is the complete opposite of McCain/Palin. That is why I don't belive you would vote for her. What do you just have a thing for female candidates. I love the McCain stategy. Anything unflatering to Palin is sexism. Give me a break!

VON - Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't think the enlistment criteria had changed that much over the years. Maybe it will put to rest some of this rash talking.
Pending or open court action automatically disqualifies you with no possibility of waiver. In fact you can not be on any type of active probation or have outstanding fines at the time of enlistment.

>
> Some members of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department, MSP, and other local agencies inside Calhoun County were working with Secret Service in the security of Mr. Obama. Mr. Obama's bus arrived in Battle Creek and pulled into the stadium area. Before Mr. Obama exited the bus, he has the Secret Service get off and tell all Law Enforcement personnel in uniform that they now have to stand behind the bus so Mr. Obama is not seen with anyone in a Law Enforcement uniform before he gets off or while in the public view. So, everyone from MSP, Sheriff's Dept., and other agencies looks at each other for a second, go and stand behind the bus out of sight so Mr. Obama does not have to see, or been seen with, what to him is 'undesirables' since he refuses to be seen or even acknowledge Military or Law Enforcement.

Newbie and Von - didn't think I'd find it, but now I know more what you mean from a recruiter's point of view - the article was New York Times, 4-22-08, by Lizette Alvarez, and reported more "waivers" are being allowed. I had forgotten that the crimes were of a more serious nature than would be expected - even assault and drugs. Don't really know what to say about that, other than it really does not sound very good.
You know when is the questions going to get away from her family? More importantly when is she going to stop talking about them. Yes, she has kids, working mom, hockey mom, kid has a disablility, kid in Iraq, kid is pregnant..wait scratch that one as invasion into my family. Who cares! What about the issues? Against earmarks? She requested 200 million Against abortion? Mccain voted for stem cell research. For oil drilling? Palin went after the oil company and now is for them? And let us not ask questions about the investigation? Seriously, this is pending so would it not be nice to have a convicted criminal as President? Well the scripted interview is ove and as Palin is shoved again in the cone of silence I have to wonder why it has been two weeks and this is her first interview? I can only guess by the staged one she will get torn up in a serious interview. Now someone can tell me I am wrong but prove it. I am tired of Repubs telling me the sun is rising as we set in darkness. I also wonder if Mccain and Palin can talk five sentences without saying something about Obama. Seriously, we are tired of WMD talk. That is a lot of talk with no proof and lots of tall tales. I am waiting for Palin to bring out a map and start pointing at pigs with lipstick.

DD50-
We were referencing the same article. I figured you had just misunderstood it. No harm. Waivers for minor (ie Misdemeanor) drug violations and misdemeanor assaults have always been granted by the miltary. What has occurred is that more waivers are being sought by recruiters on behalf of recruits. These waiver requests normally increase when the number of recruit prospects decrease. With the U.S. military involved in two conflicts the need for recruits has increased and the number of enlistees has decreased, thus necessitating the increase in waivers. The long term effects of this policy will be more apparent with the passage of time.
(But for the record, I'm not recruiter. I am prior military, but until last year I worked on the legal side of the issue, as a liason between the recruiting offices and the court system by providing police reports and court dispositions to the miltary for waiver consideration.)

This blog is truely pathetic - but I very much appreciate your post. I do think McCain and Obama are trying to have a more honorable dialog (with a few exceptions). The media seems to be intent to push controversy.

Well I'm sure Obama has his team of experts in the back room trying to drill him on foreign policy which he knows nothing about.
Also I noticed on the forum tonight between McCain and Obama. They let Obama listen to all of McCains answers off stage. When Obama was asked about his stance on public service he gave almost the same answers that McCain. Obama also wouldn't stay on subject . When asked a question on public service he got ADD and went off on energy policies , something about electric cars. I have noticed he gets ADD quite often and can never stay on subject. You ask him a specific question he will start out on the answer and then goes off in the wild blue yonder and never answers the original question. Just my observation. I can just see Putin asking him a question and he goes off on electric cars. Do we really need someone with ADD.

Ever watch the movie 101 Dalmatians? For those that have remember Cruella De Vil? I hope more young kids get to watch it in the future. Can you imagine what would have happened on the Bush Doctrine question if that had been any other press member other than Charlie Gibson? I realize that in order for ABC to get the first interview with her they had to agree to the terms of the Republican advisers but I don't believe the American people and economy are ready to spoon feed a possible leader. This is not a date this is the selection of perhaps our next President. She cannot answer every question with the same answer like she was trying to do in the interview. Did any of you learn anything about Sarah Palin the person or did you simply hear scripted answers? This is not the treatment Obama, McCain, or Biden did or will receive. I am not being sexist at all, we should treat every possible leader the same.
- 4 votes
You're right...all the candidates SHOULD be treated equally. That means not calling the ones you don't like names of Disney villains (that WAS just a little sexist, IMHO).
I honestly don't think she was treated more gently by Gibson; he asked her the same question 3 times (about Israel), trying to get her to change her answer (which she didn't). He brought up the prayer issue, which I believe she answered satisfactorily. At least she answers the questions, rather than tap dancing around them and trying to change the subject to make herself sound better.
I haven't seen any interviews with Biden yet, so I can't say how he's being treated by interviewers; McCain has been through the process enough times that most people know who he is, what his record is, and where he stands on issues. Obama, in my opinion, is a gifted speaker, but I don't get too much substance from him on issues.

No, we havn't been attacked in 7 years. But the 8 before that we weren't attacked either!! Hummmmm, not till Bush.....coiendence??
- 6 votes
There's some confusion up here, and I think I can help.
The national debt and the national deficit are not the same thing. National debt = how much our country owes to private banks, other nations, etc. National deficit = how much more we spent than took in for a given year, i.e., how much we added to the national debt in a given year.
Clinton didn't get rid of the national debt, but he did run a small budget surplus. Bush has run massive budget deficits.
- 9 votes
Careful. The Right Wingers like to point to the first World Trade Center bombing while Clinton was in office and blame him for 9/11 because he didn't go after Bin Laden with military force. That will be the usual response.
Of course, that has nothing to do with us invading Iraq. Zero. And, if it did, then the same argument could be made that Bush Sr. screwed up by not dethroning Saddam during Desert Storm.
To say that we haven't been attacked since 9/11 is because of the stellar job Bush has done is pretty naive. I read an interesting book - I can't remember the name, sorry - where they talked about a potential terrorist attack on the US (it was written a few years before 9/11). The book quoted some experts on terrorism, including some past diatribes from Bin Laden. They said the most effective attack would be one that shakes the spirits of the people, causing overreactions that would erode freedoms and the economy. At the time I thought it was far-fetched.
- 4 votes
Are you aware that we have not been attacked in 7 years?
Actually Vor, there was an 8-year gap('93-'01) in between the two attacks, so I wouldn't put too much stock in how Bush has protected this country.
- 6 votes
This country has been attacked by terrorists for years before 9/11.
2000 - terrorist bomb attacked the USS Cole in Yemen
1998 - terrorist bombs destroy US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania
1998 - rocket-propelled grenades near the US embassy in Beirut
1993 - bomb in the parking garage of the WTC
Just to name the more "major" ones. Do you think those don't count because most didn't happen in the mainland US?? To say that they are not related is ridiculous. The terrorists got more and more bold because the US just rolled over and let them keep coming without really getting serious about protecting this county and acknowleding this new kind of enemy and its unthinkable tactics.
I don't agree with this war but we're in it now. War is ugly but so is terrorism. I believe Bush did step up on our National Security unlike anyone that came before him and denying it is just plain stubborn. Get real people. A lot of the rest of the world hates the US, its lifestyle, freedoms and more, and that's been a fact for years and years.
Obama's desire to pare down our national security to such a large degree should scare you and everyone else to death.

Actually that is not true, they just don't like our goverment, which is two very seprate things.
Obama's desire to pare down our national security to such a large degree should scare you and everyone else to death.
Actually, Obama stated no such thing to pare down our national security. As a matter of fact, he advocated sending more troops to Afganistan, where the attacks originated over a year ago ( http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=email_en&refer=politics&sid=aQ5srrgyg3ak ) and what he has stated not too long ago regarding Iraq and Afganistan does show that he isn't "weak" on national security ( http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/us/politics/15text-obama.html?_r=1&oref=slogin )
I guess if such an approach worked for people such as FDR and General George C. Marshall, then what Obama stated would work as well.
- 3 votes
"Joe you need to get your facts right Clinton balanced the budget and left a SURPLUS not a DEFICIT!"
Actually, this isn't true. Well, first of all the budget and the deficit are unrelated, but I'll assume that when you said budget you were talking about a surplus/deficit, and I'll go from there. During the technology boom of the Clinton years, we hit a period where we saw that surplus. However, the boom ended before he left office, and the benefits wore off as well. Not saying that this was the only contributor to the world and US economy, but it was the single strongest factor of the time.
We have plenty of proof to that fact, because we in fact did NOT have that surplus when Clinton left office. Shortly before he left, we reverted back into the deficit margins, dropping faster than the majority of our US history, as most of our investments were geared on foolish assumptions that the boom would magically never end. Bush then took over, faced with a not only a large deficit, but an unbelievably fast growing deficit. Bush has contributed to that deficit, not as much with his policies, but with the expensive way he implements those policies. This makes those who voted for those policies often in the right, but Bush failed them in the methods of implementation, taking Clinton's failings and expanding upon them from there.
There was NO surplus following Clinton, a quick minute of historical checking can prove this to you. Our numbers dropped BEFORE he left office, but he blamed Bush as most weren't paying to the economy at the time he left office, and with a media hungry population that relied on that media to tell them the "facts," not as many knew as should have that the deficit was reinstated while Clinton was still in office. We have had two of the worst presidents in US history in a row, Clinton was lucky enough to have been in office at the right time, but the entire time the military suffered through up to 30% cuts in pay and benefits (me included as I served under him along with several friends who were sent to Iraq during those years when we were fighting there but between the wars), and we all suffered once the good timing wore off. Bush never had the good timing, we simply suffered from his incompetence from the start. I think we would have been in a marginally worse position today if Clinton served today and Bush back then, based on policies created and their actual influence without outside boosts, but both have proven to be counter-productive leaders who individually each contributed greatly to the problems of today regarding US influence in the world economy. There was NO surplus following Clinton, he created horrible economic policies that we still suffer from, and Bush took those and added in his own problems. We suffer from a culmination of two of the worst Presidents in a row, not simply one.

What McCain/Palin Dont Want To Talk About -
They don't want to talk about the skyrocketing deficit.
The Congressional Budget Office said the U.S. budget deficit for fiscal 2008 -- $407 billion -- will be more than double the deficit for 2007, hit by the wars and a weak economy, and predicted it is likely to rise further in fiscal 2009.
They don't want to talk about rising gas prices.
In its monthly short-term outlook, the government said prices at the pump would likely average $3.61 this year and $3.88 next year.
Or That
Gov Palin is busy exporting all that National Security Energy to Japan
They don't want to talk about record food prices.
U.S. consumers should brace for the biggest increase in food prices in nearly 20 years in 2008 and even more pain next year due to surging meat and produce prices, the Agriculture Department said on Wednesday.
They don't want to talk about the housing crisis.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac used accounting rules that created a ``house of cards'' as the housing market descended into its worst slump since the Great Depression.
They don't want to talk about the collapsing dollar.
The dollar weakened against other major currencies Tuesday as investors worried about the health of the US economy after the nationalization of two mortgage finance giants over the weekend.
They don't want to talk about record foreclosures.
The rate of mortgages entering foreclosure hit another record high in the second quarter, as did the percentage of loans somewhere in the foreclosure process, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported on Friday. The delinquency rate, which measures mortgages that aren't in foreclosure but have at least one overdue payment, also was the highest ever recorded in the MBA's quarterly survey.
or how McCain BFF Phil Gramm relaxed depression era protections against this while a Senator
They don't want to talk about stagnant wages.
Factoring in inflation, hourly wages were only 0.2% higher, and weekly wages were actually 0.8% lower in July 2008 than in March 2001.
They don't want to talk about the highest MISERY INDEX in 17 years.
The misery index hit the worst level since May 1991, according to a new analysis released today by the Campaign for America's Future.

Lis- Thanks for listing the attacks that others seem to have conveniently forgotten (I would have listed them, but you beat me to it!)
It seems like the far left wants to pretend everything is hunky dory, we were never attacked by terrorists (or if we were, we somehow provoked it), and because we went after them, we're "war mongers".
While I don't presume to know all the facts that led our leaders into this war, like you said, we're THERE. And yes, there are people who hate us because of what we stand for (sorry, Super Saiyan, but it's true). It's not just our government (again, look at that list - Clinton was in office for all but 9/11). It's our way of life. Our freedom and equality for all, regardless of race, gender or religion.
- 2 votes
It astonish me how Republicans like to put words in other people mouths. What does Iraq have to do with 9/11. What did they have to do with the other attacks. Dems are not saying not to fight, but fight the right people. "McCain would go to the gates of hell to get Bin Laden, but won't go to the cave where he lives". Yes, I believe some Republicans are war mongers. Just look at the RNC and the DNC. At the RNC, that's all they spoke about was war and fear while the DNC was uniting the party for a common goal to solve America's issues like economy, education, healthcare, etc....I myself like for my President to tell me the REL reason he/she wants to go to war. Not LIE to me. You are not upset that our existence in Iraq was built on a lie? I am unpatriotic because I question the government's role in the lie? Yes we were attacked by terrorists. And Obama has spoke about sending troops to the place where the terrorists who caused 9/11 lives. Not finish the war his daddy left.
- 3 votes
Ginger- besides the fact that the majority of Congress (that includes Democrats) voted to use force against Iraq (using the SAME intelligence that the President had), the entire world knew that Saddam was going to have to be dealt with at some point. You DO remember all those U.N. resolutions? You DO remember he wouldn't let the weapons inspectors in? You DO remember seeing satellite imagery of a factory where they were loading trucks as quickly as they could while UN inspectors were driving toward it? Hmmm... and then there's the fact that he allowed Al Qaida to set up training camps in his country.
I personally am not acquainted with any "war mongers", even though a good chunk of my friends are Republicans. A good number of them are military members who have served up to 3 tours in Iraq; funny thing is, they support their commander-in-chief and the mission to protect the U.S.
Google "Josh Byers letter" and read for yourself the words of a dear friend of mine who was killed in Iraq on July 23, 2003.
Remember,Clinton just printed more money to balance the budget and devalued the dollar.

CLARICE - Good for you! KEEP THE EYES ON THE REALITY. AMERICA SUCKS RIGHT NOW AND WE SHOULDN'T VOTE THE GROUP BACK IN THAT HAS BEEN SACKING THE U.S. FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS.
I'm Texan and voted against Bush for Gov and Pres. EVERY time. I'm still amazed at how trashed our country is under his leadership. (leadership?) You have to wince at that statement because he's just been a puppet for the GOP all of these years.
In addition, I have to say that I don't care that S.P. is a woman, has an out of wedlock daughter, or whether her down syndrome baby is hers or not.
I do care that she tried to fire the head librarian for not censoring books for her. I don't like that she said being able to see Russia from Alaska gave her some insight to foreign policy. Her Honest Abe answer sounded like back fill and, well, should honest Abe be used that way? I think not.
But my all time, "She Gives Me the Creeps Moment" was her answer about Bush's Doctrine. No, - I'll give her a pass on whether she knew what it was or not. But when Charlie explained the preemptive strike, I sat there in shock! She said if we "feel" there is sufficient cause to believe America is threatened, then America has the right to preemptively strike another country. --- That's it! No explanation about how the gathering of intelligence would be improved to avoid "a Bizzillion dollar WMD wild goose chase" in future. No comment that she and McCain were even considering options to improve the intelligence gathering. Nothing! Zip! Considering McCain voted to get us into this Iraqi mess, those two have to make darn sure they have answers that aren't photocopied from Bush's notes. I've had it up to my eye balls with gut reactions and fast and loose decisions!
Too much time wasted on her and it's making Americans think she's worth any media time or print time.
Bad politics here.
She and the McCain campaign are in for a rude awakening. Rove tactics might have worked in 2004, but the Obama camp is sitting nice and quite until they are ready to smack some reality and debunk their lies. Can't believe the U.S. Media wasted a whole day talking about a Pig and Lipstick.

Yes, Obama has it cinched. LOL That's why he had a luncheon will Clinton to kiss his ring and beg for help. Notice how tired he looks now a days? McCain has more spring in his step, now that's just sad. It's like Obama thought, "Once I get rid of Hillary the bulk of my work is done, it's all done hill from here" Didn't quite work like that did it?

Born again Republican = died and doesn't know it yet. It amazes me how some people have gotten so thoroughly brainwashed that they parrot things back in blogs that sound so stupid.
These people on the right fringe of society are the ones who make preachers rich and believe in the sanctity of life only to throw it away in a trumped up war.
It's really very sad. McCain said that politics is rough....I think he gets confused with John Wayne saying, in one of his films, "War is rough".

I feel sorry for you. Not only do I support my president now, but I supported Clinton when he was in office. I support whoever the sitting president is, because as a citizen I believe it's my responsibility. I may not like every decision (or any) that they make, but I WILL NOT publicly bash the leader of my country. What does doing that say to the world?
I personally feel this is STILL a great country, and will continue to feel that way no matter who is elected. I obviously hope that person is McCain, because I believe his economic policies are better, but if Obama wins, I will support him because he is MY president, not just the president of his party.

That means no matter what evil bastard is in office you will support them. The reason for electing a President is to continue or change the direction the country is going in. As Americans we have the right to not support our President and elect a new one; To, not support a way of government and elect a new one (which is what I plan to do)
GOPers, need to keep their emotions out and have loyalty over our Nation , which are the people of America. We hare a democracy which is a form of government in which the supreme power is held completely by the people under a free electoral system.
So I would rather have loyalty over America than any party - speaking of which I know which party has ran our country into the ground. If any of your love America sooooo much, you wouldn't stand to keep America going in the same direction.
You would understand that is Gov't wasn't important, what would the purpose be of having one in the first place. Don't let that less Gov't crap fool you. That is a ploy for the Good Ol Boys to get their pockets laced by Big Business. Cheney get's his pockets laced by Halliburton, just like Palin wants to lace her pockets by drilling in the North.
Any country that promotes free enterprise and neglects its people will eventually go under: For one you will lose the loyalty of many people who expect elected officials to look out for them as a whole nation, not just big business owners.
What also should be understood is massive tax cuts for the poor isn't much because of already low incomes. Also, you should notice the rise of sales tax increases and other increases after cuts. But when you place tax relief on dividens, the millions of big business owners who take more dividens than a real salary, will get over. You take 10% off of a dollar, is not the same as taking 10% off of $100,000. By cutting taxes across the board as such, the big business owners are profiting, while the poor are still not receiving the education or jobs they need to compete. And don't use the lazy argument because many poor people work at least 2 jobs, everyday, but because of inflation, rising gas prices, etc. Their rents are rising.
---------------------
Do you know gas pricing is a result of the free market? I looked for the best way to explain it and found a great explantion for those that don't know. com/articles/gasprices031908.html
People are indeed driving less. Gas consumption has fallen about 1 percent since late January.
Yet, gas prices are on the rise. Gas has averaged more than $3 a gallon for four straight months and, more recently, has surged into record territory. Estimates of how high gas prices will go this year vary from $3.50 a gallon to $4. But virtually everyone agrees prices have higher to go before they fall.
This disconnect between demand and price may seem to violate fundamental rules of economics, but gas prices are actually responding to demand of a different kind: From investors.
Contrary to the views of many conspiracy theorists, gas prices aren't set by refiners or gas stations as part of a campaign to gouge consumers. Prices are a function of the open market, as manifested in the trading of futures contracts on the New York Mercantile Exchange, or Nymex.
-------------------------
GOP has put this country under great distress. Bush has spent over $455 TRILLION on the war, yet the soldiers are crying loud for supplies? There aren't any weapons of Mass destruction. Why didn't Bush use the money he found buried with Sadam to pay for some of the war? Bush and Cheney want to continue to take over so they can get their compaines, like Halliburton to rebuild Iraq and make millions on top of millions. They do not care for the lives lost, because they are blinded by greed.
The Bush regime has you believing the surge is working. Working for what? The surge was meant to give breathing room for iraq to set up its government. So how is the surge working? Its a lie for the McCain Campaign.
Not only do I support my president now, but I supported Clinton when he was in office. I support whoever the sitting president is, because as a citizen I believe it's my responsibility. I may not like every decision (or any) that they make, but I WILL NOT publicly bash the leader of my country. What does doing that say to the world?
You're so far up on your high horse that we can't see you! Hello there!
What does that say to the world? That we're not afraid to think freely and express our opinions, perhaps?
Gov. Sarah Palin, THANKS but NO thanks..

Yes it's such a better deal to elect someone who can't even handle his senate job. I was impressed with Obama when he spoke at the 2004 convention, because he actually said that the government could help people, but ultimately they had to get a job and help themselves. Frankly he hasn't stated anything like this since he began his presidential campaign. I personally would rather my taxes not go through the roof. For the record, I'm a single mother of a 13 year old who does not receive child support, owns my own home and works 5 days a week!

Marylj1212,
Please take the opportunity to read Senator Obama's tax proposal which is laid out on his website. Unless you earn in the top 10% of wage earners, the effect of his tax proposal if passed upon you would be a decrease in taxes. I listened to both the DNC and RNC conventions. It was reported that the average RNC delegate held a net worth of $500,000. If you fall within that group, McCain's policies are probably best suited for you. If not, you might want to take a second look at the Obama ticket.

gideb, you realize the only groups to see a real tax increase will be the top 1%, right? The rest of the top 10% see only a marginal increase (something like less than 1%) under Obama's plan and everyone else gets a cut.

Don't let the Repugs hear you mention the R-word (redistribution) of wealth. We certainly don't want anything to slow down the ever-growing disparity between the dirt-poor and the super-rich. But hey...this is America, everyone is born equal...what a bunch of BS.

"Please take the opportunity to read Senator Obama's tax proposal which is laid out on his website. Unless you earn in the top 10% of wage earners, the effect of his tax proposal if passed upon you would be a decrease in taxes."
And the effect of a tax proposal that takes more from the top 10% is? That's right, harm to EVERYONE ELSE. Might as well just tax the poor and middle class more, it leads to the EXACT same results down the road. Let's look at his tax proposal for a second here.
First, corporate tax rates. Currently, 35% in this country, making it the single highest corporate tax rate in the entire world, more than double that of the second. What does this mean? Well, obviously, this is the single greatest contributor to outsourcing, as many companies don't even see profits as high as 35% after following costs are factored in, making outsourcing not a choice as much as a requirement. So they already suffer from this problem, and THEN Obama not only wants to maintain that in his tax proposal, but add additional taxes to the wealthy.
So now we have profits taken from a world record corporate tax, and income taken from a high income tax for the owners and leaders of those businesses. There is only one potential outcome. To maintain a profit line that can provide that continued income and afford a corporate tax payoff, costs must be increased to cover current dues. This causes people to buy less, which creates greater job loss to go with outsourcing, which causes less to be able to afford products, and thus businesses must again jack up costs or are driven under. Now what happens historically 100% of the time when it gets that bad, bailouts and a readjustment of tax rates.
I suggest that YOU please take the opportunity to read Obama's tax proposals (not listen to him give a speech promising to only take from the rich, ignoring how this ALSO affects the poor and middle class), and while doing so imagine how this affects costs for them and how this affects business and how THAT affects the poor and middle class. You'll find that they are all tied together, and claiming to "stick it to the man" by taking from the rich leads to the same costs associated with simply taking from the poor and middle class directly, with the added problem of increased outsourcing from such a ridiculously high corporate tax rate, which leads to even greater increased costs. It would be taking LESS from the poor and middle class to simply tax them, Obama's tax proposals are even more harmful that a direct attack on the majority.
So to simplify it, you might as well just say that Obama is increasing taxes on the poor and the middle class, because his tax policies are doing just that through an indirect approach that looks like he's only going after the poor. Take your decrease in taxes, but then pay even more in the long run than you would with an increase in those taxes, with even greater job loss to go with it. How is that beneficial to the majority, how does that help the poor and the middle class? A promise to only go after the rich in taxes does NOT mean that the same policy won't indirectly take from everyone else, which is exactly what Obama's tax policy does. It's easy to see and understand, all you have to do is read his horrible tax policy and ignore the speeches and promises that don't match what he has placed on the table.
Carefull, Beckwolf...the dems don't believe in the "right wing hoax" of a free market economy or trickle down economics. They don't believe that any of the money in their 401(k) was earned from dividends from large corporations including (gasp!) oil companies. And they definitely don't believe that it might be unreasonable to raise taxesw on the richest people in our country who ALREADY pay a disproportionately high percentage of taxes. After all, as Obama said, they can afford it, right?

Ring, ring.
'Hello?'
Oh, it's for you, Ms. Registered Independent/Born Again Republican. It's Ms. Pahlin. She says, thanks but no thanks to your kind of support!
Like I've said-
Flaming: the last refuge of those who have nothing intelligent to say.
Boo Hoo, the poor rich that have to already pay a "disproportionately high percentage of taxes." Tell that to all of the people supporting those wealthy people by working for them while they are losing their homes and trying to make a living on stagnant or minimum wages. The statistics are there for everyone to see. Under Bush, the rich have been getting much richer the middle class is disappearing, and the poor are getting poorer. Yes, poverty has significantly increased under Bush and his lousy economic policies that you are championing. This argument at best sounds really, really, insensitive.
Anyway, to Beckwolf and fedup, we tried the right wing economic policies for 8 years! Tax breaks for the wealthy - and the results are clear. This is just like Republicans - don't believe what you see and hear, just believe what WE tell you.
Beckwolf, in other words, supply-side economics. The counter side to supply is demand. It is clear that lower income people will spend more when taxed less, equally increasing the profits of business. So when we talk about income taxes, it's largely a wash and if you're making less than $250,000, you're only doing a favor for the wealthy by voting Republican.
Secondly, you mixed corporate taxes with income taxes, which have stark differences in their impact. We have been drawing a deficit to fight this war, passing out tax rebates, what have you. That is tax dollars already spent. Corporations don't have emotions, so putting it on them is one way of putting it on all of us. I don't agree with that approach, as I believe it should be put on us instead of trickling it down (hurts business). I see Americans get emotional over paying more, so we're left putting it on that which doesn't have feelings, the corporations.
BOOOOOOO....The words that SCARE Republicans Affirmative Action, Abortion, Welfare, Gays, and Losing War. That's all the Republican candidate has to say to hype up the base.
Affirmative Action - Helped more white women than blacks.
Welfare - More Whites are on welfare than Blacks.
Abortion - Dems are not FOR abortion, they just don't think they should tell a woman what to do with their bodies. Especially in incest and rape. Just how Republicans feel no one should tell them what to do with their guns.
Gays - Govenrment should stay out of the bedroom like republicans want govenrment to stay out their pocket book.
Losing War - Can someone tell me what victory is again?
Perhaps the people (who owe the jobs they have to those wealthy people who created the jobs) shouldn't have bought homes they couldn't afford. Perhaps they should have gone to school to learn a trade that would pay more than minimum wage. Perhaps instead of sitting around complaining about how the rich are sticking it to them (never mind the fact they're the ones paying the salaries), they should have been trying to better their chances to get a higher paying job, instead of expecting the rich to pay their way. It's not a matter of sensitivity. It's a matter of fact.
So instead of taking responsibility for your own life, you want to steal from the people who have worked to achieve something, who provide the jobs, and yes, whose lifestyles are in fact better than yours.
I DO believe what I see and hear. I HAVE done the research. I work for a small business and completely understand the ramifications of my boss's taxes being raised - I could lose my job. If his taxes are kept relatively low, he can afford to give me raises. He can afford to invest in the stock market (another thing that drives the economy).
Ginger, I really feel sorry for you. You seem very bitter and angry.
Yes, there are a larger number of whites receiving welfare, but the percentage is much higher among blacks. Not sure what your point is. Republicans don't want to completely do away with welfare, just reform it so that there isn't the abuse that we have now.
There are many of us that believe that life begins at conception. That even the tiniest embryo has its own unique DNA, meaning it isn't just a part of the woman's body. That every human being has the right to life, including the unborn.
We have an amendment that allows us to own guns. Not sure about the connection, as there's also a "right to life" amendment.
I haven't heard of anyone trying to make being gay illegal. But as many of us believe that marriage is an institution founded by God, and was designed to be between a man and a woman, we don't think gay "marriage" is appropriate.
And I hate to be the one to break it to you, but we ARE winning the war in Iraq. That's pretty much the standard definition of Victory.
obama isnt qualified to mabey take over as Mayor in Detoit. Thanks YOU
Fed up,
Please stop saying "I feel sorry for you...". No you don't one bit, so enough with the phony patronizing.
Sounds like Palin probably didn't even think about the question, is she qualified. Sounds like an answer from the shallow person that I think she is. The most important report that I've heard from people that know her is that she doesn't get that involved in matters. She wanted to build that sport complex in her home town but then didn't get involved enough to know that the city didn't complete the purchase of the land but built it anyway and then lost millions in a lawsuit. Now we want to let her possible run the country?
I thought there was to be no campaigning on September 11th? Does an interview count?
Looks like McCain/Palin's putting the country first again.
If we wish to preserve any sense of decency in this country we will not vote for them.

Wow - first you all complained that she wouldn't give an interview.

Then you should get after ABC because they chose to run it, get real!
Yeah, no campaigning on Sept. 11th, which all day the media just HAD to point out was Obama's idea when he called McCain after his acceptance speech to "congratulate" him. Then we see Obama chatting with Mayor Bloomberg for a good ten minutes and the embarrassing caption "Waiting For Senator McCain to arrive at Ground Zero" which of course was because he was already at another 9/11 memorial service in Pennsylvania. The media did Obama's campaigning FOR him today.
ABC chose to air this interview so blame them, not McCain and Palin.
P.S.: Reporters are freakin' idiots. When Gibson asks if she's ready to be President...what the &@$! do you think she is going to say?
I bet those "present" votes that Obama placed in the Senate were excruciating.

"I thought there was to be no campaigning on September 11th? Does an interview count? Looks like McCain/Palin's putting the country first again."
Wait, McCain/Palin? The first political interview I saw where the candidate had to start throwing in promises and turn it back into a campaign speech again on the 11th was Obama. McCain and Palin followed suit, but by no means was this only them. If you're going to insult a candidate for campaigning on September 11, how about insulting EVERY candidate that did this? You know, just to be truthful and accurate and all that.

We don't need someone with such little understanding of world affairs or such a reckless tongue getting anywhere near the White House.
But you can count one thing... the media will tell us she did wonderfully, no matter how clueless she sounds. Because at this point, Palin could fart and the media would tell us that she just "energized" women all across this nation. Actually, that would be the requirement under our NATO treaty obligations if Georgia is accepted as Obama and Biden have both claimed they also desire. She was quoting legal requirement, something that no President can ignore regardless of what party they belong to. She simply quoted almost word for word what Obama himself has already said, so if that's not understanding the finer underpinnings (despite that it was a direct reference to treaty regulataions and a required act under those laws that a President is required to acknowledge), then Obama doesn't understand them any more than she does. It's getting old, hearing an accusation against one candidate that happens to mirror the actual actions of the candidate the accuser supports, but the supported candidate is ignored on that issue entirely. This really is a no-contest on this issue, BOTH presidential candidates and both vp candidates have an identical stance on this one, especially since it is a legal obligation that the US is required to follow and no President has the authority to ignore.

Check out this article on the great Gov. Palin. Not only is she lying and trying to deceive us concerning the Bridge to Nowhere, Earmarks, etc., but she's also immoral as h***:
SARAH PALIN SUPPORTS SHOOTING WOLVES AND BEARS FROM AIRPLANES
Governor is Strong Proponent of Controversial Alaska Program
Washington, DC - Alaska Governor and GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is a strong promoter of the aerial hunting of wolves and bears, a practice that has been condemned by conservationists, scientists and many hunters alike. It involves shooting wolves and bears from the air or chasing them to exhaustion and then landing and shooting them point blank. The animals, shot with a shotgun, usually die a painful death. The hunters involved in the program keep and sell the animals' pelts.
"Sarah Palin's anti-conservation position is so extreme that she condones shooting wolves and bears from airplanes or using airplanes to chase them to exhaustion and then shoot them point blank. Most Americans find this practice barbaric, but it's routine in Alaska under Palin's leadership," said Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund president Rodger Schlickeisen.
Sarah Palin has supported aerial hunting since taking office despite the fact that the National Academy of Sciences, the National Research Council, the American Society of Mammalogists, and more than 120 other scientists have called for a halt to the program, citing its lack of scientific justification and despite opposition from many hunters who see it as violating the sportsmen's ethic of fair chase. Palin in 2007 even proposed offering a bounty of $150 per wolf, as long as the hunter provided the wolf's foreleg as proof of the kill. And just earlier this year, she introduced legislation to expand the program and derail a scheduled August 2008 citizens' vote on the issue. The bounty was determined to violate the state's constitution and her legislation failed.
"Sarah Palin's positions against America's wildlife could put her to the right of even the Bush administration," said Schlickeisen. "She is a promoter of one of our nation's most ugly and cruel wildlife hunting programs and Americans deserve to know her views on such matters before they vote."
- 9 votes
Alaskans....not Palin....but Alaskans voted down a proposition a couple of weeks ago that would have banned aerial hunting of wolves and bears. Who voted it down? Natives, whites, city dwellers, hunters, etc. All had the opportunity to vote and they did.
The purpose of the hunt was to cut down on the number of predators that were killing the other wildlife (e.g. moose) in the areas that natives hunt for subsistence. Fair Chase is not an issue because these animals are not being hunted for "sport", but for the purpose of killing them. And Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund...bunch of whackos in my (and many) opinion.
I've never seen so much hate in one place as I've seen here in these postings. Can't be healthy.

Its not hate you see here, its ignorance. Most of these liberal posers are Obama plants, out of work fast food grunts, and the mentally challenged. No attacks for 7 years and they call Bush bad for America. More attacks would be bad for America. Then what would they say?
Obama hasn't done anything to protect America. They say McCain is Bush. He isn't, but if McCain can do as well as Bush at protecting US, he's the right guy.

VOR: No attacks in 7 years? Terrorist attacks is your seemingly only issue? You know the terrorists have never attacked Canada, what is their secret? How does their leadership keep its citizens safe from terrorist attacks?
Bush was in office when the attack occurred. If he is so powerful when it comes to prevention of terrorism, why didn't he stop it then? Careful, I know you want to point at Clinton not getting Bin Laden the first time, but that is a slippery slope for you since he still isn't caught.
Hey, arguably the safest places to live are like China and the former Soviet Union where no one, citizen or foreigner, can use the bathroom without permission from the government. I'm sure at the time, the earmark was for a far away imaginary place. Well that dog came back and bit 'em in the butt didn't it! In this case a Pit Bull, I love it!
Good one! One never gets tired of gay references. Or quoting FOX News. Or California bashing.
By the way, the funding to the Bridge to Nowhere was part of a transportation package and, if you'll recall (but probably not as it never aired on FOX News), it was mentioned for removal by another Senator and Ted Stevens (R-AK) went absolutely nuts on the floor, threatening to resign and promising never to support the other Senator's legislation again. It was great stuff. Hey! how is Sen. Stevens doing these days? He's an Alaska Republican, too, right?

Its not hate you see here, its ignorance. Most of these liberal posers are Obama plants, out of work fast food grunts, and the mentally challenged. No attacks for 7 years and they call Bush bad for America. More attacks would be bad for America. Then what would they say?
Obama hasn't done anything to protect America. They say McCain is Bush. He isn't, but if McCain can do as well as Bush at protecting US, he's the right guy."
I wondered why there were always do many Dems on blogs, considering it's a dead heat. The numbers should be 1 for 1. But I believe you're right, they are all waiting for their meal ticket to get elected. It's hard to get them foodstamps if you don't have connections.

You're right about the numbers. Should be 1 to 1. I think that the Librals have more time on there hands. Or its part of Obama's plan to water down the opposition's base. There is a definite Liberal bias here, and in the news.
As for the foodstamps, that's the tip of the iceburg. There will be little personal responcibility if O-Mama gets elected. I already pay too much tax and I will have to pay more. Sure, tax will go down for many, maybe most. but the added taxes to corporarations will be added to prices and we all will pay more every time we buy something. Its called inflation.
I am in the middle somewhere. Looking for the right candidate but only finding that once again I will be voting for the lesser evil. Not that either one is "evil" in my mind. But some of the posers here are just ridiculous. I started to post to exchange ideas. Seems most want to promote negativity rather than have an intelligent dialog. And if you make a post that has the word black or white in it, you're called a racist. Crazy.
For me it boils down to character and experience. Both seem to be close on most issues, but on others they are worlds apart.
Anyway, good luck!

Of course people(Palin/McCain supporters) are trying to defend killing wolves.
Their argument is flimsy. The wildlife needs to be protected form PEOPLE not wolves.
Wolves have been around hunting prey way longer than men have been around to try and guesstimate any impact wolves have on wildlife populations.
Animals(moose/deer/antelope) were able to survive and populate while being hunted by wolves before, and they can continue to do so.
Blame men for killing animals needlessly and encroaching on their habitat.
Hunting for sport should be banned. Hunting for sustenance and to live should be the only hunting allowed.

"You know the terrorists have never attacked Canada, what is their secret?"
Ummm, yes they have, just nothing as nasty or publicized as 9/11. Your comment is like saying England has never been attacked, just ignore the fact that they used bombs instead of planes. Of course, we HAVE had attacks here since 9/11, just nothing as serious and not as publicized. A bomb went off in Houston last year (on a project I was working on). The Galveston area around Houston consists of oil pipelines, natural gas lines, and water treatment lines all crossing over and under each other. Someone attempted to blow up an oil line, thinking they were sneaking into an oil refinery and transportation line. They were one plant off though, going into the water treatment center instead (they look almost identical). In the middle of the night, they set off a nice big bomb, trying to explode an oil refinery. Front page left out the bomb detail, just calling it a big fire. It would have been a lot larger if they had hit the much higher pressure oil line though, and I doubt that would have gone without the word bomb being mentioned. It shut down the center for two days, but the damage was minor enough (they hit a boiler line that was fairly easy to patch and then replace), and life moved on with an upbeat of flyby helicopter and plane surveillance of the harbor afterwards. Canada has hit the same problems, and if I remember correctly, a couple of the people sent to Guantanamo even were pulled from Canada. I might be wrong on that one, but I do know of a few arrested on terrorism charges there by the Canadian government, which sees more problems in that line at home than we seem to, at least as advertised.

An Alaskan:
How did the Native Americans hunt for wolves before we invented air transportation? They should stay with that. It is more sporting.
This blog has gone completely off track. I thought we were supposed to discuss the interview? Missy Sarah needs to spend more time with the flash cards. I have to admire her ability to look someone in the eye and not reveal that she is not knowledgable about the Bush Doctrine at the beginning. I liked the diversion question she asked. However, her lack of feeling in her eyes scares me because she will be able to lie to us without blinking. You will never know the truth.

That's some pretty big talk for someone who supports a VP candidate who is the governor of the state, once again, that leads the nation in bellying up to the porkbarrel trough!
Alaska, roughly a tenth of Arizona's population, is set to receive $506.34 per capita in federal earmarks, THE HIGHEST IN THE NATION, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense. While Arizona, the second fasted growing state in the nation, will receive just $18.70 per capita.
- USA Today, March 22, 2008
Makes that comment about a pig and lipstick a little more interesting, doesn't it?
Meanwhile, EVERY man, woman and child in Alaska will receive a check fo $2,000 this year thanks to the Alaska Permanent Fund, funded by oil revenues. AND another $1,200 will go to EVERY man, woman and child because of the state has taken in so much additional money this year that it is awash in $9 BILLION dollars in surplus.
That means that EVERY man, woman and child will get a check for $3,200 this year, thanks to oil revenues while the rest of us "Outsiders" (that's what Alaskans call people in the lower 48 states) struggle to afford gas for their cars and food because of price increases due to transportation costs.
Isn't it about time that Alaska pays it's own way and stops pigging out at the trough of earmarks paid for by the rest of America?
What strange bedfellows that McCain/Palin ticket...kinda like the Jekyll/Hyde of politics...

And VOR, lets talk about foodstamps. Do anyone who reference welfare or foodstamps even know a single person who collects this aid. I don't think so. You are just spewing Republican rhetoric. Sorry, not all Demorcrats are on welfare. You are looking at a Democrat who has earned everything she has. No welfare and foodstamps here. And since you were wondering where i reside, Maryland, is the number 1 state in the nation with the highest income per household. And PG County is the number one predominately Black County in the nation with the highest income per household. Maryland is a blue state. So if you really did your research, you might be surprise as to who are on welfare or using foodstamps.
Actually, Gingersnaps, I do have a friend who's a single mom with 2 young sons who is on welfare, housing assistance, etc. BTW, she's a Republican.
I don't believe anyone claimed ALL Democrats are on welfare. Not sure where that came from. No one accused you of being on welfare, either. But having grown up in & around that area (born in DC), I can guarantee there are a large number of residents on some sort of public assistance. It's not Republican rhetoric...it's reality.

fedupwith please post where you got those facts about DC and its large number of residents on some sort of public assistance. There u go again! Whats up with you girl? I know plenty of people who get assistance. And I'm sickened by what they do with my tax dollars. Foodstamps and assistance from Child Action and they drive a BMW. Pathetic.
The issue isnt who gets them now, its all that will get assistance if Omama is elected. And all the people who will not be paying taxes but still get to use all the services we tax payers provide. Thats the issue sweety.
And I dont care where u live. Really.
It's so easy to tell you are full of s**t. Your posts reek of it.
I don't see any concern from you that many babies and children have died from our "war" in Iraq and other places we conduct raids, bombings/airstrikes.
You don't know who I support but you act like you do. I'm neither a Rep nor a Dem.
I've never supported anyone aborting a baby just because they didn't want it or couldn't afford it. I'm all for adoptions and birth control/planned parenting.
I don't think I have the right to tell women they have to give birth to a child produced by rape or incest. If childbirth is too risky for the mother and/or baby, then the option for abortion should be kept open. If the baby is going to be severely deformed or have chronic health problems that would ruin the quality of life, then it's up to the parents to decide.
Killing anything(human or animal) without good reason is wrong. PERIOD.
You should be more concerned with all the taxpayers money the Bush Admin is wasting on our occupation of Iraq.
We could have secured our borders, air/seaports and airspace thrice over with what they have already spent in Iraq.
VOR will fight and fight for that baby to be born in abject misery. Once born if the mother asks for help he laughs and says "you're on your own".
That makes perfect sense; for the insane.
LOBO and DEMMY and others of apparent limited cognitive ability
Thanks for your total lack of insight into what I think. You should write fiction for a living instead of doing here for free. Pay attention now so you can get a clue.
First, I, like our military, am against collateral damage. Our war efforts attempt to minimize it at every occasion. I feel terrible for the innocent people that get caught in the middle of war.
Second, if you were paying attention to my posts regarding the woman that does not want her baby, you would have seen that I support providing assistance to the mother to raise or put the baby up for adoption. The mother would not be on her own. We, the good tax paying public would help her and her child.
You're assumptions and misguided conclusions are a staple in the liberal mind. Focus, listen, and learn, if you can. Attacking me does no solve the problem, or make for a good discussion. It only exposes you for what you are.
No need to make assumptions regarding what I think. Ask me and I will tell you, clearly, in words you will understand. What you do to dilute the answer, and it appears you will, is up to you.

I don't care who you support or why. But if you say something stupid, I'm going to call you on it.
I happen to agree with you that killing humans is wrong, with three exceptions. The death penalty, abortion if the mother's life is threatened., and if there is evidence that the unborn child has birth defects, I support abortion as an option.
Regarding incest and rape, abortion creates a second victim. Abortion should not be an option, but the state should take over if the mother doesn't want the child.
As far as killing without good reason, who decides what good reason is? You? The dicussion was about killing wolves that threaten other animals as a result of over population of wolves. That's what started this thread. And you said that the Reps were wrong for killing the wolves. I pointed out that the Reps want to prevent killing the unborn. And so on. Re-read it. You might see what happened.

Perhaps Senator McCain should keep his back to the wall and never never let Gov Palin stand behind him on the subway platform. I'm sure she is ready to "step in" as president and I'm sure she thinks the sooner the better.
- 3 votes
I think you're confusing McCain with Obama and Palin with Hillary. Biden admitted she was a better choice so why didn't Obama pick her, it was that subway thing for sure.
Since the Palins seem to feel that the taxpayers should pay for their expenses, even when they stay in their own home (not the Governor's Mansion), is Todd Palin expected to submit a per diem request for pay and for his flights around the country with his wife? Did we pay for his convention suit from Sacks Fifth Avenue? As a blue collar worker he ONLY makes between $100,000 and $120,000 and as governor, his wife ONLY makes a few hundred more.
This canned interview stinks. How could she have not blinked since she didn't know what the job of a vice president was? How could she have not blinked when her entire career has been "Alaska First"? How could she have not blinked when all she wanted from America was more per capita per Alaskans than for the rest of the citizens of the United States?
If Palin thinks that she is ready, then show the Country by getting out on the campaign trail WITHOUT McCain!
- 4 votes
Ready? Heck no. Her state is usually flush with money, thanks to pork and oil company contributions. How will she be able to handle a federal debt that's waay out of control? Raise sales taxes as she did in Alaska? Eliminate funding to states?
Her administrative history has few, if any, examples of compromise. She seems to prefer the all-or-nothing approach. So, how would she deal with Russia? She's already stated she's against another cold war. She also stated that it would be advantageous to the US to have a democracy in that part of the world. Is is a mere coincidence that (Soviet) Georgia has OIL! And had a US-backed pipeline! If Russia doesn't back down, will Palin use nuclear weapons?

"By the way....this contest only polls even because the cell-phone users AREN'T counted."
Yes they are. Your accusation is one that someone started and people who don't think for themselves have begun to repeat. Cell phone user right here, polled a few times, as well as polled a couple more online through the Internet. No land line, as quite a large percentage of the country has no land line, what with a cell phone already doing what a land line can and all and having both being a waste of money. Sorry, but your accusation is completely bogus, and the number about him being up by 20 points is made up. I wonder, how would you know he is up by 20 points if cell users aren't being polled? You shot yourself in the foot with that statement.
Proofread before spreading lies, you claimed to not see accurate polls because they ignore cell-phone users, and then to magically know the score right after claiming that there is no accurate score. Ummm, yeah, you completely busted with that one.

Registered Independent / Born Again Republican, what are the odds, because you have a 30 year vet of the senate versus a governor with less than 2 years experience. I NEED a new suit. When obama gets elected he'll take your money to buy me one, JUST SO WERE ALL EQUAL AND HAPPY.
Beckwolf,
Either your cell phone number is published or you are lying. This story was all over the news this weekend and was acknowledged by both Rep and Dem pollsters.
Pollsters can only get published numbers.
Explain.
If such questions are as tough as Charlie Gibson gets, he should resign from his career. Palin should answer tough questions, like those that were put to Obama (by O'Reilly) and to Biden last Sunday. The soft questions are patronizing, condescending, and an embarrassment to the profession of journalism. The American public deserves better.
- 6 votes
I agree that she needs to answer tough questions. Just remember that Sen. Obama has had been "fluff" interviews as well. O'Reilly's interview was one of the toughest he's faced thus far and he handled himself very well. I would love to see interviews conducted by average citizens that wouldn't include "fluff" or talking points. It always seems to me that these interviewers never really ask questions that require an in-depth detailed answer from any of the candidates. Most of the questions that are asked are merely excuses to lapse into talking points.

"Palin should answer tough questions, like those that were put to Obama (by O'Reilly) and to Biden last Sunday."
Obama still hasn't received the level of questions she has. O'Reilly was so soft with Obama it was disgusting, must have been trying to keep people from making accusations that he was being too biased against Obama, even though by the numbers not a whole lot watched but much, much more are claiming to be able to critique the interview that they never saw and know nothing about. It was mostly worthless, Obama was given easy questions and nothing was said when he responded by either giving a promise instead of a policy answer with numbers to back it, or giving an answer entirely unrealted to the question. I was hoping for an unbiased interview, and decent answers. Instead, we saw Obama receive every back door out of a question, and no follow up when he failed to provide an answer, with no solid, tough questions. The news source doesn't matter, either the interviewer acts like he's sleeping with Obama, or he acts like he is worried about an outcry from being not only equal with Obama as everyone else, but not being soft enough.
Oh please . . . O'Reilly was getting so excited, he barely stopped to take a breath. He clearly wanted to make his own views certainly as clear as Obama's. You thought he held back? I think not.
"Obama still hasn't received the level of questions she has. O'Reilly was so soft with Obama it was disgusting,"
You know i never liked O'Reilly's interviews because then tend to become more of a yelling match than anything, but the one thing I give him credit for is that he never goes soft against Democrats, so your statement is false.
You folks are right, O'Reilly didn't do an interview- he did a cross examination.
"Iraq: speak"

Isn't there value in education in the US anymore?
Sarah Palin received her bachelor's degree (B.A.) in journalism after transferring five times in six years: Hawaii Pacific University, North Idaho College, University of Idaho, Matanuska-Susitna College, University of Idaho again. None of the colleges have entry requirements.
There are no records of any honors achieved. Sarah hasn't released her records to the public, normally an indication that no honors were received and the grades were enough to graduate.
She could be a heartbeat away from the leadership of the free world. Would you want your doctor to have that kind of education?
Barack Obama received his law degree from Harvard University.

Where are her tax returns and asset holdings? We haven't seen or heard anything about that either. Again, I'm sick of talking about her. Already released, already posted all over the news. Guess you missed that week.
And agreed, bring the conversations back to what McCain, AND OBAMA, will or won't do for this country. And while we're at it, bring the conversations AWAY from promises, and for once look at actual policies being declared, those policies being the only reason I'm voting for McCain, as I can't afford the outsourcing that results from Obama's corporate tax and increased income tax to the rich, nor his oil intensive ethanol dependence, nor his reduction in work assistance programs, nor his elimination of technology invention incentive programs for individuals outside of big business which bring in new technologies and would thus boost jobs in new energy fields, nor the majority of his real proposals (not his promises) that show a help to the poor and middle class on the cover but common sense shows that the long term results would be as expensive to the poor and middle class as Bush. Taking a different route to get to the same problems for everyone, I can't imagine voting for the left wing's version of Bush. Eight years has been enough of that, the left wing version is just as bad as the right.
